Courage is doing the right thing when everyone else is doing the wrong. Courage is about being brave, and standing up for what you believe in. Courage is about being fearful, but breaking that fear. In 70 Kll a Mockingbird, Harper Lee does an excellent job portraying what rel courage because courage isn’t just “a man with a gun in his hand, It’s when you know you're licked before you sion begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what” (149). Atticus uses tisfo “anf in describe Mrs. Dubose, and ends up describing himself as well as Link Deas. All three of these characters show courage because they know they may not win, but they fight their hardest qd (% anyway, because it is the right thing to do, and it is what they believe in, “hots « One character who shows courage and fortitude is Mrs, Dubose. Mrs. Dubose does not look courageous, but looks can be deceiving. She is sassy, often mean, and always asserts her opinion on everything. Yet Mrs. Dubose shows courage because she knows she is going to die, but wants to die free, off of her morphine addiction. “She said she was going to leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody” (148), and that’s exactly what she did. Had she stayed on the painkillers, she could have “died without so much agony” (147), but “she said Gillespie- 2 she meant to break herself of it before she died” (148). Atticus marvels at her resolve. even, though her death is imminent and she is in a lot of pain. Her actions show courage because she could have taken the easy way out, but she took the hard way. She knew she was “licked before she began, but she began anyway and saw it through no matter what” (149). That is what real Vb courage fs tard wy intend of teeny no mate the challenge or wht ies bead, ) srs and hoping for the best. cp Another character who exemplifies courage is Atticus Finch, Atticus is courageous when he defends Tom Robinson, who is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Tom is a colored man, therefore it makes Atticus’s job much more difficult. Atticus shows real courage, because although he knows that itis unlikely they will win the trial, he takes on the challenge to defend Tom Robinsow, because he knows itis the right thing todo. He does this even though no one Ahovyo— else in town agrees with him, and even his sister says that “t ruinin’ the family” (110). He knows that even though “we were licked a hundred years before we started, [it] is no reason for us not to try to win" (101), This displays that Atticus has determination, and that he always tries his best at everything he does. Throughout the trial, Atticus respects all of the witnesses, and acts modest. Even after the trial, when Tom is found guilty, Atticus stays positive, hopeful they can get an appeal. Atticus portrays the exact definition that he uses to define courage. He knows he probably isn’t going to win the trial, but he defends Tom anyway, and fights his hardest rouge wlhig, Tas whe cous ing wh yo ike wien others do not, and knowing there might not be success, but doing it anyway, because it is Qo - meaningful.
