Reflection Paper
After spending sixteen hours observing Mrs. Hudson's science classes, I can truthfully
express my genuine excitement for the opportunity to be an educator. Mrs. Hudson showed me
many different tools that I will be able to hopefully implement into my own future classroom that
will provide students with the best learning opportunity possible.
Mrs. Hudson showed me many different IEP's (Independent Education Plans) that had
been redacted. She showed me how to read and comprehend the information listed on
them. She discussed the best way to approach students and their families when discussing this
topic. She also explained the different ways you can help the students obtain the necessary
information. This goes back to how each student learns material in a different way. Therefore,
an example of how to help a student that, according to their IEP form, needs verbally explained
instructions would be to go to the student and talk about the instructions with them. Then, ask if
they have any further questions and relay that if they need further assistance, to not hesitate to
ask.
Mrs. Hudson also showed me different approaches of lecture for different classes. For
example, her higher education classes, consisting of gifted and talented labeled students, enjoy a
class with a long, detailed lecture as opposed to her 'regular' classes, where the students not only
dislike long lecture periods, but also don't have the necessary attention span for them. Therefore,
an idea for the 'regular' classes is to have a short lecture that lasts no longer that fifteen minutes

and has fill-in the blank styled notes. This way the students only have to pay attention for a
small period of time and are being engaged in the lecture by filling in the missing pieces of the
notes.
Overall, I am very glad that I was assigned to observe Mrs. Hudson. She showed me a
great deal and opened my eyes to a lot of things that have now better prepared me for my career
as an educator. After observing for these sixteen hours, I feel much more prepared and confident
for my own future classroom. I can't wait to get started!
