Remember to add or subtract “like terms”.

Like terms have the same variable and the same corresponding
exponents.

1. (4x2 – 3x + 6) + (2x2 – 4x – 1) = 6x2 -7x +5

Add the 4x2 and 2x2.

Add -3x and -4x.

Add the 6 and -1.

2. (5x3 – 7x + 1) – (2x3 – 6x2 – 8x – 1)

3x3 +6x2 +x +2

Subtract 5x3 and 2x3.

Subtract 0 and -6x2.

Subtract -7x and -8x.

Subtract 1 and -1.
