It was good to see you teaching at Roslyn School this morning Finn. You capably managed and taught a diverse
class of 30 year 4-6 children through the initial morning activities and a Maths lesson using a grid and the points of
the compass. The children responded well to you as their teacher and there was a relaxed and positive feel to the
room for the duration of the teaching. Very well done.

Following the bell the children settled on the mat and attended well as the roll was called. This followed by a brief
discussion of current news and items of interest to the class. Your manner with the children was engaging and it
was apparent that they enjoyed working and learning with you. It was good to note that you did not only include
the children who were quick to put up their hands but called on others, including some of the more reticent to
share their thinking and knowledge. You gave the children thinking time. Good practice.

It would have been good to give the children a think, pair and share time during the discussion and sharing
about the meaning of integrity.

The Maths lesson using the compass points and grid paper was the second of two. (at this stage) You introduced it
well and the children were responsive and keen to get to work with the activity you had prepared. While
underway you roamed the room supporting the children in their work. The children were excited in discovering
the answer to the grid puzzle!

The lessons would lend themselves well to looking at maps (google maps!) with regard to the compass. The
role of a compass when tramping etc, the sun and the compass points. You could then have brought the
children in to some real life discussion and learning around the activities prepared. It would have been good
practice as well to set to work the more able and confident children and keep with you some of the children who
were not as certain for some further teaching. They would then have had a much greater chance of being
successful with the activity.

Your management of the class was relationship based. The children were with you and there was minimal need
for correction or for the learning environment to be interrupted. Very well done. ( you are aware of the work put
in by your AT who from day one has established a learning environment of respect, sharing and supporting, to
make the most of all learning opportunities)

You used a clapping pattern on two occasions to gain the attention of the class.

Do ensure that all children know your expectations (to repeat the pattern and give you, straight away, their full
attention) and that they follow that up by complying. Remember to pause and scan to ensure all are with you
before speaking to them.

You have worked hard with all documentation. Well done. You are very well organized and your planning is
thorough and geared appropriately to the learning needs of the children. You have been well prepared for all
teaching tasks. You have been reflecting in some depth and it is pleasing to see the focus of much of this on
children and their learning.
You have three thoughtfully stated goals. I would have liked to have read some reflection regarding the progress
made against these.

It would have been good to hear you bringing te Reo Maori into the language of the classroom (rather than just
with the morning greetings!) The use of the te Reo needs to be a growing part of the language used, and as we
shared can readily be introduced across the curriculum through classroom commands and greetings, waiata
etc.

I would suggest that you move now to a grid style of planning format (with support from your AT) Be sure to
include the LOs, sequence where helpful, and needed resources. Have space available for your evaluation of
teaching practice and formative assessment of student learning. Who needs further support and teaching?
Who needs moving on or extending? It was good to read an assessment statement for one student .. has
not been engaged, perhaps set 3 minute tasks you were considering the needs of the student to maximize
potential for learning. Make all planning a living document geared to your needs as the teacher to meet
the learning needs of all in the class.

Achievements
The professional way you have approached this practicum.

You have established positive relationships with the children and the staff of the school.

You have worked hard to make the most of all learning opportunities available.

You are well organized. All documentation is of a high standard.

You have involved yourself, school wide. Attended meetings, supported sports teams and assisted your AT before
and after school.

For on going development
Develop planning into a grid form that will be more manageable across the curriculum

Develop a routine of regular formative assessment of student learning

Review and complete the writing - class profile. Consider the impact of socio economic status and the school
and class environment.

Consider ways to integrate some aspects of the culture of children other than European New Zealanders in your
room and programme (not specifically discussed) Greetings in their languages is an easy way to start!

Develop your confidence with and use of te Reo Maori in the class programme

Do date all documentation reflections, assessments etc

It was great spending time with you this morning Finn and following through the hour of teaching and activity.
Your Associate teacher has been impressed with the work that you have put in and the excellent teacher /
student relationships established.

You have many attributes that will enable you to be most successful as a teacher. I wish you the very best for a
career in teaching.
