‘A crate of mass m = 25 kg is released from
rest at A while pressed against a spring whose )
constant is k = 1000 N/m. At the moment of
release, the spring is compressed 0.75 m. The
surface between points A and B is well greased
and can be considered to be frictionless, how-
ever the surface between points B and C'is run-
ning out of grease and so has a variable coeffi
cient of kinetic friction given by:

‘A L.8kg collar A and a 0.7kg collar B can slide with-
out friction on a frame consisting of the horizontal rod
OE and the vertical rod CD, which is free to rotate
about the vertical axis. The two collars are connected
by a cord running over a pulley that is attached to
the frame at O. At the instant shown, the velocity
va of collar A is into the page, it has a magnitude of
2.1m/s, and a stop (not shown) is preventing collar
B from moving. If the stop is suddenly removed, de-
termine the velocity of collar A when it is 0.2m from
O. Assume that collar B does not hit O, that collar
A does not come off the rod OF, and that the mass
of the rod is negligible.

‘The wedge B is at rest and the spring is compressed an
amount 5 when the mass A hits it with speed vq hori-
zontally as shown. The coefficient of restitution for the
impact is e. Write all the equations needed to solve for
the post-impact velocities of masses A and B. Clearly
number the equations and list the unknowns for which
you would solve the equations. Show me everything ex-
‘cept for the solution to the equations. Do not solve the
equations!

Disk A moves at a constant speed on a fixed, fric-
tionless, horizontal table while connected to the fixed
point O via an inextensible, massless string. Discuss
the constancy or lack thereof of: the linear momen-
‘tum, angular momentum, net force on A, and kinetic
energy of the mass A. This is a concept question—no
calculations are needed.
