A Brief Report on the Local Scholars Programme

Green School Bali | August 2015

Bali

Green School is located in the island of Bali, surrounded by the villages of Sibang Kaja and Sibang Gede, our local communities.
Our vision is of a natural, holistic, student-centered learning environment that empowers and inspires our students
to be creative, innovative, green leaders.

Dear Friends of Green School,

Thanks to the generosity of people like you, the Green School
raised US $654K in philanthropic income during 2014-15.
This is a testament of the commitment of our community of
over 2,170 supporters who gave so generously through the
year.
Each donation and gesture of support makes an invaluable
contribution to the Green School and the Local Scholars
Programme.
This was the most successful year of fundraising for Green
School. Most importantly, this was the first year that we
covered the costs of the scholars.
The Local Scholars Programme (LSP) supports the Indonesian
students so that they are able to
attend Green School. We raise
these funds through unique
events, key facilities, networking
and corporate partnerships.
According to a recent strategic
review, 80% of parents,
faculty and staff, all agreed
that the LSP is a highly valuable
part of our school community.

So how did we get here?

We implemented a Donor Relationship Management
system (DRM) to help us better connect with our donors and
manage our fundraising goals. Many such systems cost from
$10,000 to $20,000. We researched and compared many
systems, and found a highly competitive one that cost us US
$450. We are committed to spending donor dollars wisely and
to keeping our fundraising costs low.
We had our most successful campaign to date with our
CrowdRise crowdsourcing campaign. Through the
incredibly generous support of some anonymous donors we
raised $113,000 with amazing support from all corners of the
globe.
Last year we had close to 10,000 visitors on our tours, an
opportunity to share the mission, the vision and the magic of
Green School. We had a team of 10 people who volunteered
to support the tours, including students, parents, staff and
one of our founders, John Hardy. 100% of the tour revenue
goes to the Local Scholars Programme.
Many companies have supported the Local Scholars
Programme, both financially and through service gifts.

Our Silent Auction was a successful partnership with local

businesses and all the community got involved to support this
valuable event.
The community helped to host some spectacular events like
Bamboopalooza as well as special evenings with Michael
Franti who donated all of his concert revenue to our Local
Scholars Programme.
I Kadek Rai Hendrayana (Rai) is the fifth Local Scholar to
graduate from the Green School. Rai is a wonderful young
person with amazing musical and artistic talents. If you had
the privilege of watching his Greenstone presentation this
year, you saw how gifted and passionate he is. Rai intends to
have a positive impact on his own local community and has
explored ways to improve the sustainability of local culture
and gardens. He will continue with his studies and working
with Kul Kul Farm, assisting with farming and permaculture.

For the 2015/16 year, we have 27 Local

Scholars. The Development team is focused on establishing

a solid donor database, engaging those wonderful donors,
supporting the local community, and promoting community
events and activities that engage and enrich the social and
cultural environment of our School.
In 2014/15 a strategic review was held and Fundraising was a
key focus in the assessment.
The ongoing growth and development of this program is
integral to Green School and our 2015/16 Development Plan
builds on the key ideas from that review.
In the coming year we will continue to support the current
scholars and their families, and we will raise US $600K with
the following areas of focus:
1. Improve Fundraising Communications and Events
2. Improve the Green School Tour
3. Support the Wellbeing of the Local Scholars
4. Develop Stronger Outreach and Networking

Our Scholars

have an invaluable support through

their studies that allows them to develop skills and expertise
that would not be possible without the Green School
education.
Currently in her third year of English studies at Udayana
University in Bali, Gika Savitri is working part-time at Green
School.
Working in Green School allows me to give back to the school that
supported my five years of schooling and I am gaining
professional skills by connecting with visitors who come to Green
School. - Gika, Local Scholar Graduate

With the Local Scholars and Kul Kul Connection programs

we are able to attract students from around our community
in Sibang Gede and Sibang Kaja, small villages around the
School. They enrich our experience at the School, and they
have the opportunity to experience the
Green School education. The
scholarships we are able to
provide will have a big impact
on their life journey and also
open doors to empower the
local community.
Nia came to Green School with
a strong motivation to compete
in the Olympic Games.

She was born in 1998 and started participating in national

swimming competitions when she was only 9 years old. Nia
loves being here because she gets the support in both her
sports and academics. In addition to sports, Nia is very
involved in arts such as making wayang kulit (shadow
puppets), and singing.
Green School is my future. Green School changed my
personality very deep. Thanks a lot to make my dreams to be real
and bring me to my special swimming race this year in Perth,
Australia - Sweania, Local Scholar at Grade 11

Gusde is a confident and curious

eight year-old who has just
completed his fifth year at Green
School. Constantly bubbling over
with questions and curiosity,
Gusde questions everything from
why he learns inside bamboo
structures to why goats reside on
campus. He enjoys playing soccer with
his peers, writing English letters and numbers and exploring
the nearby river.
Gusde dreams of exploring the globe as a pilot and sharing
the worlds beautiful wonders with his family.

Our Supporters at School are our

teachers, students, our staff and our volunteer tour leaders

that include John Hardy, our Development team, our Business
manager Pak Wayan Carma, the president of the Yayasan Ibu
Ika, our Director of admissions Pak Tim Fijal and our
Communications team.
John and Cynthia Hardy are the co-founders of Green School
and the pioneers of the Scholars Programme.
John grew up in a very small Canadian village and, as an
undiagnosed dyslexic, he had a really hard time in school. He
came to Bali when he was 25, started a successful company,
and dreamed of a school children would love. When they sold
their previous business, John and Cynthia put their hearts and
souls into creating such a school the Green School.

I have four kids, and theyre not going to have the life that I had.
When Cynthia and I decided to build Green School. I also decided
that I would spend the rest of my life doing whatever I could to
improve the possibilities of the local kids.
So heres the world, and here we are in Bali. Its a tiny, little island
- 60 miles by 90 miles. It has an intact Hindu culture. Weve had a
wonderful life here, and weve decided to do something unusual.
We decided to give back locally and thats why we have the Local
Scholars Programme. - John Hardy, Co-Founder of Green School

John leads the Founders Tour every

Wednesday to share the mission
and vision of Green School with
the nearly 10,000 people that
visit us every year.
The weekly contributions of our
tour leaders are a real gift of
themselves.We also have our
teachers, students, and parents to
participate on the tours, its a program
to which all our community contributes.
The local scholars program has helped to make much of our
experiential projects much more authentic. Our local students are
able to make community connections and give insights to local
culture and language enabling us to enrich our middle school program. - Glenn Chickering, Head of Middle School at Green School

Bali

The local scholars add a deep

richness to our High School
community that is nearly
impossible to measure.
We feel so grateful and
humbled to have them
here at Green School. -

Leslie Medema, Head of

To All Our Donors

I often have the pleasure of hearing and seeing the results of your generosity to
our Local Scholars Programme.
I love the School and spend as much time as I can on the campus. The buildings
are beautiful, of course, and the teachers are brilliant.
But what I love most is seeing the children all of them from all over the world,
and from the nearest banjars studying, learning, playing together. I know together
they can change the world.
You our donors make this possible.

Thank you for your generosity.

Suksma mewali thank you very much,

Dennis Heffernan, Chairman of Green School
Board of Directors
