PROTECTED AREAS IN BULGARIA A PREREQUISITE FOR THE
DIVELOPMENT OF ECOTOURISM
ABSTRACT
Besides their ecological significance some protected areas are of great interest
to tourists and important for development of tourism. They are a major natural tourist
resource. The well preserved unaffected environment enhances their attractiveness in

comparison to the surrounding territories, which suffer from anthropogenic pressure.

On the other hand the various prohibitions and restrictions have led to the fact that
their environmental protection status becomes an obstacle for tourism and ecotourism.
The paper discusses the importance different categories of protected areas have on
tourism development. It covers types tourism which can be developed on their
territory as well as the contradictions which may arise.
