American Association of State Troopers is an intimate organization of active and retired

soldiers. It also includes state Highway Patrol agents who join to qualify for life
insurance benefits at low cost.
From 6000 members account, dues represent just $ 180,000 $ over 3 million raised in
2011. The audience gave the rest after being approached by professional fundraisers of
the group. They took over almost 80 percent of donations. Donations are not tax
deductible.
Last year, the association has spent nearly $ 500,000 in cash amount . Most of the
amount was spent on members-life insurance premiums. This means that police officers
which are represented by the charity only get about 16 percent of the total money raised.

In the last eight years, the average percentage of funds for direct assistance to members
was much lower. It was only 9 percent.
Since 2004, the organization has collected about $ 45 million. Out of this , the
organization spent less than 4 million for member benefits.
American Association of State Troopers was disciplined five times by regulators in three
states for false statements or misrepresentation by the solicitors. Since 1994 the
organization has spent more than $ 300,000 for the settlement of all these claims.
The longtime director of the association, Ken Howes, retired last year. His successor is
M. Breeding. He said in an interview : "We all want to collect more money from
fundraising, but there's no way we'd even be able to do this amount of calls. Postage and
printing alone would take you under. "
