Increased in bilirubin causing yellow
pigmentation of the skin

Fetal blood is destroyed causing


increased in bilirubin
Untreated hyperbilirubinemia(kernicterus)
higher than 25mg/dl can cause brain damage.

Liver is unable to process bilirubin because


it is immature.

Clinical Manifestations:
yellowing of the skin, hypoexia, lethargy, hypotonic,
poor suck reflex, increased sleepiness, high-pitch cry,
fever

Medical Treatment:
photothearpy
Surgical Treatment:

Nursing Interventions:
assess for dehydration w/photothearpy, maintain eye mask, reposition, maintain adequate fluids.
