Drywalls and terraces of Therasia

Kostas Athanasiou
In this paper the importance of the drywalls and the terraces on the island of Therasia
is examined. These two man-made morphological features are met everywhere on
the island. It is claimed that drywalls and terraces played crucial role in the smooth
function of the social and economic life of the island. The people of Therasia used
the drywall-terrace tool to level the land and make it suitable not only for agriculture
but also for construction and habitation. The drywalls that were built at the riverbed
of the streams had as a role to manage the rainwater and channel the torrent water
to the cisterns and the fields. Drywalls were also used as the means of designing the
roads and the paths of Therasia both inside the settlements and in the countryside.
Ultimately, drywalls and terraces are an overlooked and humble tool, which was
crucial for the survival of the people on the island during the previous centuries.
