Problem

Goals

A system of equations problem requires

the use of one or more of the methods for
solving systems of equation, but its not
always clear which one we should use.

The goal is to understand why we

should choose to use one method of
solution over another. We need to
understand when certain methods are
most useful.

Alternatives

Pros + Cons -

Graphing Method:
Graph the equations on a x and y
coordinate grid to determine their solution

Elimination Method:
Add equations to eliminate variables
Substitution Method:
Solve for a particular variable in one
equation then substitute its value into the
other equation

Other methods:
There may be other algebraic methods
that a student could put here, if they so
desire.

Visualizes the system. Helpful for

inequalities to see where they overlap.

Time consuming and more complicated

Helpful with more than 2 variables.

With less than 3 variables, its less

intuitive.

Quick. Best for fewer variables.

Can become tedious and complicated

with more variables.

+
-

Certain cases where another method

would be most helpful.
Care should be taken not to make a
mistake in the algebra.

Decision(s)

Reason(s)

Many methods will work to find the

solution to a system of equations, but
some may be more helpful in a given
problem than others.

Its important to become familiar with all

the methods of systems of equations to
then be able to see their benefits in
certain cases. This will allow for
accuracy and efficiency in solving the
problems.
