WHAT IS A TASK?

TASKS are activities where the target

language is used by the learner for a
communicative purpose (goal) in order to
achieve an outcome Jane Willis

TASK BASED LEARNING

It is a different way to teach languages.

It can help the students by placing them in

a situation like in the real world

A situation where oral communication is

essential for doing a specific task

Task -based learning offers an alternative for

language teachers.
In a task-based lesson the teacher doesn't predetermine what language will be studied
The lesson is based around the completion of a
central task and the language studied is
determined by what happens as the students
complete it.

The lesson follows certain stages.

What are the advantages of

TBL

Task based learning is useful for moving the

focus of the learning process from the
teacher to the student

It gives the student a different way of

understanding language as a tool instead of
a specific goal

It can bring teaching from abstract

knowledge to real world application

The structural framework of TBL

Raise knowledge

Thorough introduction to topic by teacher

use of pictures, posters and
demonstrations.

pre-task phase introduces the class to the

topic and the task, activating topic-related
words and phrases.

Task Cycle

Working with and using the target language

Activities like pair work, group work

Exercises like information gap activities.

The task cycle offers learners the chance to

usewhatever language they already know in
order to carryout the task, and then to
improve the language

TASKS
students do the task, in
pairs or small groups.
Teacher monitors from a
distance, encouraging all
attempts at
communication, not
correcting. Since this
situation has a "private"
feel, students feel free to
experiment. Mistakes
don't matter.

PLANNING
Students prepare to
report to the whole class
(orally or in writing) how
they did the task, what
they decided or
discovered. Since the
report stage is public,
students will naturally
want to be accurate, so
the teacher stands by to
give language advice.

REPORT
Some groups present their
reports to the class, or
exchange written reports,
and compare results.
Teacher acts as a
chairperson, and then
comments on the content
of the reports.
