RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS:

The experiment was conducted for good and several faulty conditions of the rotating machine elements. A
two layer feed forward network, with sigmoid hidden and softmax output neurons was used for
classification. Classification involves two major phases which include training and testing. The purpose
of training data is to define a model that can be used to classify the new data whose condition is unknown.
Once training is done the model can be used for testing. The classification efficiencies at various speed of
the shaft is shown in table 1.

Figure 1: Confusion matrix of ANN at 600rpm.

From table 1, it is found out that a maximum overall classification efficiency of 92.0%percent was
obtained at a speed of 600rpm.Figure 1 shows the various confusion matrix at a shaft speed of 600rpm.
From the figure, the following inferences were made:
1. The boxes representing the diagonal elements shows correctly classified instances. For instance,
in the fifth row of training confusion matrix fourth column gives the number of data points
belonging to ORFB which are correctly classified as ORFB.
2. In the same row, column two gives the number of data points belonging to ORFB but are
classified as good shaft with unbalancing mass and column six gives the number of data points

belonging to ORFB but are misclassified as good shaft with unbalancing mass and outer race
fault bearing.
From Figure 1, one can find out that the maximum misclassification occurs between column five and six
which represents outer race fault bearing and good shaft with unbalancing mass and outer race fault
bearing respectively and differentiating between these two fault conditions is found to be difficult by the
model. Despite the misclassifications, an overall classification efficiency up to 92.0%, which is a
reasonable value, is obtained.
