In recent years, however, there has been growing controversy over the use of the death penalty in

the United States. Those who support it defend it as a fair and necessary punishment for the
committers of atrocious crimes- in particular, murder. In contrast, the opponents of capital
punishment claim that it is ineffective, goes against basic morality, and should be abolished.
