to steal and pass off the ideas or words of

another as ones own
to use anothers production without
crediting the source
to commit literary theft
to present as new and original an idea or
product derived from an existing source.

In other words, plagiarism is an act of

fraud. It involves both stealing someone
elses work and lying about it afterwards.

Plagiarism
can
be
both
intentional and unintentional.
Students can be punished
similarly if they copy a paper
from the Internet, copy a paper
from another student, or use
one or two ideas from a book
and forget to cite them.

What happens if you get

caught plagiarizing?

So How Do You Avoid It?

Paraphrase, Paraphrase, Paraphrase

TIP
Do NOT try to paraphrase sentence by
sentence. It will sound too much like
the original.

Lets Try It...

While sitting on a wall

one day, an egg had
an accident which
resulted in tragedy
because no one in the
kingdom could repair
him.

The
kingdom
mourned the loss of
Humpty because he
was broken beyond
repair when he fell
from the wall.

Your Turn
In groups of 3, you will read the paragraph you
have. You will use the techniques from the
paraphrasing slide to rewrite the Unintentional
Cheating paragraph on the blank sheet.
