USE OF DATA

School counselors utilize student data for a number of reasons. Student data might
include factors such as gender or race, or even test results from previous semesters.
These are some examples of how beneficial such data can truly be:

Why Use Student Data?

Displays accountability and measures progress towards student goals


Monitors student development and academic progression
Pinpoints injustice within school system
Detects students experiencing academic problems or behavior troubles
Offers practical evaluation
Establishes an necessity for change
Aids in application of intervention strategies, programs, and services
Improves or modifies the strategies provided to students
Confronts outdated school guidelines
Validates the need for additional resources to aid in program efficiency

Types of Data

Behavioral data - Discipline referrals, suspension and attendance rates, parent


and guardian involvement, patterns of course enrollment, alcohol/drug
violations, and homework completion rates
Achievement data - Such as GPAs, standardized test scores (Smarter Balanced
Assessment), pass rates, dropout rates, and achievement scores
Competency/Standards data - Indicates student performance on ASCA
standards, state standards, and/or district standards
Disaggregated data - Analyzed by variables such as gender, ethnicity, or
socioeconomic status
