Service Learning Project
In Service Learning class, all students had to complete 40 hours of volunteer work. I
chose to volunteer at Padan Elementary School. I thought this will be an excellent idea because I
enjoy helping young children. I also knew that it will be enjoyable and not just an assignment to
complete.
During the fall semester of 2015, I volunteered at Padan Elementary School. I spoke with
the vice principal about ways I could help and what my abilities were. She set up a schedule for
me on the days I would volunteer. I would go on the days I did not attend school. I rotated
between four teachers and worked in the office for an hour.
I would do various tasks for each teacher or administrator. I worked with kindergartners,
first graders, and second graders. I would help students complete their assignments. I read to
students everyday. I also put together assignments and stapled them. In the office, I would file
papers and make copies. I also taught students basic math and how to read. If a student was
disruptive, I would accompany them to help them focus. Each class had a different task.
I learned many things doing volunteer work. I learned patience when working with
others. I also learned how to communicate with others in a positive way. I realized that helping
others brings me joy and purpose in life.
I had tons of fun completing this project. I have become a better person because of it. I
hope that others will have an opportunity to volunteer their time to help others. I would definitely
do it again.
