AEROPHONES
In the Hornbostel-Sachs classification system,
Aerophones are instruments which produce
sound by the action of air passing through an
enclosed tube or some other kind of
resonator. All wind instruments, including
keyboard-operated ones like organs &
accordions, are aerophones, as is the human
voice.
CHORDOPHONES
In the Hornbostel-Sachs classification
system, Chordophones are instruments
which produce sound by the vibration of a
string or strings (chords) over a resonating
chamber. All string instruments, including
keyboard-operated ones like pianos &
harpsichords, are chordophones.
IDIOPHONES
In the Hornbostel-Sachs classification
system, Idiophones are instruments
which produce sound by the vibration of
the body of the instrument itself (rather
than a string, air tube, or membrane).
All percussion instruments other than
drums are idiophones.
MEMBRANOPHONE
In the Hornbostel-Sachs classification
system,
Membranophones
are
instruments which produce sound by the
vibration of a membrane (natural or
synthetic) stretched tightly across a
frame resonator. Drums & mirlitons are
membranophones.
