Research Summary
Coexistence is the interaction between two parties to achieve mutual
communication,benefit, cooperation, peace and security. It is the stripping
away of both external and internal scourges.Peaceful coexistence is
therefore: a relationship between two groups in which both benefit from
each other. Coexistence is therefore highly important and a civil necessity.
It has been a feature of theMuslim nation from since the era of the Prophet
to this day. This has been the examplefor all future
generations and the precedent for all Islamic guidelines pertaining to it.
Loyalty and allegiance ( )howeverinvolvecloseness, love and advocacy,
whilenon-allegiance means) )distancing oneself, hatred and enmity.The
comprehensive meaning of allegiance ( )in Islamic law is: love of
Allah (God) and his servants, and advocacy and defense of His religion and
its followers. As for distancing (),its meaning, according to Islamic
law, is the opposite of allegiance and loyalty. It means: hatred of the
disbelieving people and atheists, as well as hatred of the enemies of Allah
and His servants. The law about not having close ties with non-believers
however varies depending on the situation of the individual involved. The
Islamic laws regarding names and terms also apply to him.
In issues pertaining to coexistence, some people are confused. As a result,
they harbor many misconceptions as they try to reconcile a perceived
contradiction between coexistence and implementing the doctrine of
friendship or enmity. These misconceptions all stem from the fact that some
texts cited, regarding loyalty and enmity, were bound by certain conditions
or special circumstances. Consequently, the issue of enmity towards the
disbelievers only applies to those among them who are waging war on the
Muslims. They base their opinion on the permissibility of a Muslim man to
marry a Jewish or Christian woman. They perceive that marrying them
necessitates having close ties with them. In addition, enmity towards the
disbelievers leads to them having a negative view of Islam.

In this paper, I have answered all these misconceptions using both textual
and intellectual evidences. I have shown the difference between outwardly
showing kindness and maintaining the belief in the doctrine of friendship
and enmity. I have also explained that there is no contradiction between
coexistence and the belief in the doctrine of friendship and enmity.
I ask Allah the grant me success guidance. He is the best of Protectors.
And may Allah's peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad
and his family and all his companions.
