Ethiopia: World-Record Holder Meseret Defar

Back at the Carlsbad 5000

2:24:31

(Running Competitor) Spring is a time

for lacing up the flats and taking to the
roads, and on Sunday some of the fastest
runners in the world will be lining up in
one of the most scenic locales, the seaside
town of Carlsbad, California to compete in
the ultimate pavement race: the 31st edition of the Carlsbad 5000.
Meseret dear
In the womens division, Ethiopias Meseret Defar will be the clear runner to beat.
Defar, 32 years old, is arguably one of the
best runners at the 5K distance ever, having won two Olympic gold medals in that
distance on the track. The Ethiopian has
dominated at Carlsbad three times. And in
2006, she set the still-standing fastest road
5K time in the world, 14:46. I cant believe
10 years have passed since I set the world
record in Carlsbad, Defar said. A lot has
happened to me on and off the track since
then, but it remains a race which is close to
my heart for many reasons.
After her Olympic win in 2012, Defar took
a hiatus from the sport to start a family.
Since the birth of our daughter Gabrielle
last year Im now back racing well and my
indoor performances show me that I am
ready to run well, run fast and hopefully post another quick time, she said. Im
excited for the rest of the year, Im looking
forward to Carlsbad as my next challenge
before turning attention to the track and
the Rio Olympics.
Ethiopias famed rival, Kenya, will have
athletes at the starting line on Sunday
most notably, the woman wearing bib F2,
Caroline Kipkirui, who is a rising star in
her country. The 21-year-old Kipkuri owns
a 15:24 personal best for 5000m. Another

Kenyan expected to give Defar a run for

the money is former Florida State standout Violah Lagat who has run 15:35 for
the 5000m and has been setting personal
bests in the shorter distances (1500m and
mile) this year, which might be indicative
of speed for Sundays race.
The United States has two aces toeing the
line: Alisha Williams of Golden, Colorado
and Jen Rhines of Boston. Williams has a
sub-15-minute personal best (14:58) and
has shown versatility by running PRs in
the 10,000m and the 10-mile last year. Jen
Rhines is a three-time Olympian and set
her PR in Carlsbad back in 2007 (15:21).
She will be attempting to set a new U.S.
Masters record (15:48) on the speedy and
scenic course.
The Carlsbad 5000 is a signature Rock n
Roll event and isnt limited to elites. In fact,
the fun starts with the Junior Carlsbad
pre-registration party on Friday. That next
day, 1,500 young runners ages 12 and under will give it their best in 11 age-group
races.
Sunday is all about the 5K as participants
earn their finisher medal. Runners over
21 will have the opportunity to celebrate
in style at the beer garden with some free
brews thanks to Pizza Port. Live music,
sunshine, cool ocean breeze, and plenty
of on-course entertainment will make this
years Carlsbad 5000m the race to be at this
weekend.

Acupuncture needles
Traditional Chinese medicine explains that
health is the result of a harmonious balance
of the complementary extremes of yin and
yang of the life force known as gi or chi. Qi
is said to flow through meridians (pathways)
in the human body. Through 350 acupuncture
points in the body, these meridians and energy flows may be accessed. Illness is said
to be the consequence of an imbalance of
the forces. If needles are inserted into these
points with appropriate combinations it is
said that the energy flow can be brought back
into proper balance.
In Western societies and several other parts of
the world, acupuncture is explained including concepts of neuroscience. Acupuncture
points are seen by Western practitioners as
places where nerves, muscles and connective
tissue can be stimulated. Acupuncture practitioners say that the stimulation increases
blood flow while at the same time triggering
the activity of our own body's natural painkillers.

Trudeau Is Bringing Back The Canada The World Used To Know

Turner, the life-time political electoral success of Jean Chretien, the diplomatic experience and depth of Lester B. Pearson, or
the unique cerebral qualities of his father.
What he had was just a controversial last
name, youthful vigour and an understanding of people. It is proving more than
enough.

PM TRUDEAU
SamuelGetachew
I was in Debre Libanos, Ethiopia, visiting
family, when the conversation turned to
Canadian politics.
My uncle reflected on the Canada he understood and remembered. In a world
where many wondered where Canada had
been under Prime Minister Stephen Harper's decade, he detailed the Canada he remembered.
This included having an international perspective, respect for international institutions such as the United Nations, and a Canadian society that acted like a neighbour
when disasters struck.
During the the Ethiopian famine of 1984
or the Asian Tsunami of almost a decade
ago, in South Africa during the apartheid
regime, in Burma and in Cyprus, Canada
was an admired society that often raised
its voice and resources when injustice oc-

curred.
I think of the Canada that acted on behalf
of the African South Asian victims of Idi
Amin and the nation that acted on behalf of the modern-day victims of Bashar
as-Assad's brutality.
My uncle talked about the only prime minister he knew, the late Pierre Trudeau, in
glowing terms. Then, he asked, what happened to Canada recently? I explained to
him that Justin Trudeau, his son, happened.
He has been an advocate for what is right
and not just popular. This is what should be
expected from our political leaders -- the
standard to pick the leaders of the future.
For a number of hours, under beautiful
Ethiopian weather, the politics of Canada
became the only topic of our conversation.
The reality is, Justin Trudeau became PM
without a Rhodes scholarship like John

Since his election, he has been well-received

and respected by many. What is personally
appealing about him is the people he chose
to surround himself with, the standards
he lives by and the ideals he has embraced
since being elected prime minister.
History one day will rightfully credit him
for saving the Liberal Party of Canada from
near death and ending the ultra-conservative Harper era.
I explained to my uncle how Justin Trudeau
has brought much respect and substance to
our politics.

The prime minister has opened up his own

family's struggle with mental health, and
how he has been a powerful defender and
advocate of young people.
I told my uncle about Trudeau's concerns
for refugees and Canada's neglected indigenous people, and how he has been an
advocate for what is right and not just popular. This is what should be expected from
our political leaders -- the standard to pick
the leaders of the future.
This is essentially the ingredients of what
makes us all proud to be Canadians and defenders of our traditional values -- whether
we are in a rural part of Ethiopia or within
Canada.
We saw some of that mojo in Washington
D.C., as the PM made his mark next to
President Barrack Obama.

I told him how he has started to make gender parity the norm, diversity our strength,
compassion our tradition and the issue of
indigenous Canadians, the concern of all
Canadians.

I was not old enough to have experienced

what former CBC reporter Brian Stewart,
once described as "Trudeaumania" half a
century ago, nor had I the opportunity to
endorse a "just society" signature of Pierre
Elliott Trudeau. However, I welcome, embrace and celebrate the Justin Trudeau era.

I explained how his devotion to his family,

his eloquence in both of Canada's official
languages and his willingness to engage everyday Canadians in political discussion is
bringing us closer together.

With this leader at Canada's helm, perhaps,

the world will no longer ask us, "Whatever
happened to Canada?" They will have their
answer in the deeds we do as a nation and
the values we will aim to live by.

It is no wonder why he has been chosen to

receive a special commendation at the the
Catalyst Awards Dinner in New York for
advocating diversity and gender equity.

Leaders & Legacies.

Take for instance the so-called moderate, Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon.
In recent weeks, without any real consultation
and allegedly because of noise complaints from
eight people, she made a decision to shorten a
two-day multicultural festival -- Afrofest -- by
half.

In doing this, she ignored
made-in-Toronto events such as the Toronto
Air Show which has much more complaints
from Torontonians.

To the organizers of Afrofest, she
tweeted, in a patronizing tone, how "We'll
reward good behaviour" if the organizers accepted her decision and kept the noise low.
The organizers responded and called her action
"completely unfair and discriminatory." Only
after public outrage the mayor intervened and
the city had a sudden change of heart.

Mayor John Tory has also taken
many controversial and Donald Trump-like
stands on a slew of issues. or Toronto's 65th
mayor, John Tory -- who once reflected how he
was not sure if white privilege existed in society; who was once, as mayor, an advocate of
the hurtful police practice of carding against
strong opposition from Toronto's diverse com-

munities and even the Ontario Human Rights

Commission, but flip-flopped in days when the
mostly white establishment spoke out against
it. To Tory, black voices are not as important.

In addition, Tory has refused to meet
with thoughtful and passionate leaders, such as
the young people behind the Black Lives Matter movement, and instead has been more accessible to accept irrelevant community awards
from a slew of African-Canadian organizations.

Like the actions of Rob Ford, the actions of Mayor Tory and Councillor McMahon
are toxic and hurtful to the kind of society we
dream to have in Toronto.

Historians and foes will debate the
legacy of Rob Ford for years to come. He was
an incompetent mayor and used racial slurs that
I found offensive. That is why I never supported him and my disappointment in him had its
limits.

However, I voted, donated resources
and volunteered for Mayor John Tory, and that
is why I find the actions of the current mayor
and that of his most loyal allies within council
even more hurtful.

Rob Ford's Toxic Legacy Lives On In Toronto City Council

Samuel Getachew

I do not think the City of Toronto
should erect a statue to memorialize Rob Ford.
I do not think Ford was a good mayor and I
have never supported him. I have never been
a member of Ford Nation nor been a fan of the
antics of the former mayor.

Heck, I even took him to the integrity
commissioner and forced him to apologize for
his use of racial slurs. However, I mourn his
death.

How can I not mourn the death of
a 46-year-old person, who is a father of two
young children, and died at the prime of his
life?

Ford was only two years older than
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau when he died.
His death is a tragedy and a direct result of a
disease that is killing many of us.

While I was not a supporter of his,
I can never deny the fact that Ford was a passionate and determined Torontonian. I had
many memorable interactions with him; how-

ever, the one I remember most happened mere

months after I made a formal complaint about
him to the integrity commissioner. I was passionately adamant that his actions warranted
punishment, and he believed I was wasting my
time.

Upon an international artist visiting
Toronto for the first time, he invited me to his
office along with the artist, who was visiting
Toronto for the first time.

As always, he was kind, gracious,
shy and courteous in person. Sadly, he looked
nervous and out of his element occupying such
an important political institution, yet I could
not help but admire his determination. At the
end, I felt sorry for him.

Did I think Rob Ford was racist? Perhaps. But I know his actions were no more racist or hurtful than some of the actions of some
of our current Toronto municipal leaders.
Like the actions of Rob Ford,

the actions of Mayor Tory and

Councillor McMahon are toxic and
hurtful to the kind of society we
dream to have in Toronto.

destroying private satellite dishes on peoples homes. Eventually the government
applied pressure on the satellite company
to drop OMN, which has now been off the
air for over two months.
Social media has partially helped fill the
information gap. Photos of injured students
and videos of protests have been posted to
Facebook, particularly in the early days of
the protests. But in some locations the authorities have targeted people who filmed
the protests on their phones. At various
times in the last month, there have been
reports of social media and file-sharing
sites being blocked in Oromia, including
Facebook, Twitter, and Dropbox. Website-blocking has been documented before
in 2013, at least 37 websites with information from Ethiopia were blocked. Most
of the sites were operated by Ethiopians in
the diaspora.
Independent non-governmental organizations that might be reporting what is
happening face similar restrictions. The

governments Charities and Societies Proclamation of 2009 virtually gutted domestic

nongovernmental organizations that work
on human rights issues. The independent
Human Rights Council released a report
on the protests in March. It was a breath of
fresh air, but the council released it at great
risk. As the first report from Ethiopian civil
society on an issue of great political significance, it was a damning indictment of the
limits of freedom of expression in Africas
second-largest country, with a population
of 100 million.
The government may believe that by strangling the flow of information coming out
of Oromia it can limit international concern and pressure. And so far the response
from countries that support Ethiopias development has been muted. The deaths of
hundreds, including many children, have
largely escaped condemnation.
Yet the governments brutally repressive
tactics cannot be contained behind Ethiopias information firewall for long. The
sooner the government recognizes this and
acts to stop the mass arrests and excessive
use of force, the better the outlook for the
government and the affected communities.
The governmentwith the assistance of
its allies and partnersneeds to support an
independent investigation of the events in
Oromia, commit to accountability and justice for the victims, and start dismantling
the legislative and security apparatus that
has made Ethiopia one of the most hostile
places for free expression on the continent.
Whats happening in Oromia has long-term
implications for Ethiopias stability and
economic progress, and Ethiopians and the
world need to know what is happening.

Twitter, WhatsApp Down in Ethiopia Oromia Area After Unrest

Internet messaging applications such

than a month in parts of Ethiopia that
include Oromia region, which recently
suffered fatal protests, according to local users.
Smartphone owners havent been able
to access services including Facebook

All are not working here for more than
one month, said Seyoum, who teaches
at Ambo Universitys Woliso campus.
The blackout is targeted at mobile data

Protests that began in November in

Oromia over perceived economic and
political marginalization of Ethiopias
most populous ethnic group led to a
crackdown in which security forces allegedly shot dead as many as 266 demonstrators, according to a March report
by the Kenya-based Ethiopia Human
Rights Project. The government has
said that many people died, including
security officers, without giving a toll.
One social-media activist, U.S.-based
Jawar Mohammed, disseminated information and footage from protests
to his more than 500,000 followers on

The move fits a familiar pattern of

restrictions on freedom of expression
and access to information by Ethiopian
authorities, said Leslie Lefkow, deputy
director for Africa at New York-based

A Massive Drought in Ethiopia Again?

Despite Ethiopias
strong economic
growth, 80 percent of its population subsists on rain-fed agriculture. French media
report that crop production in regions such
as Afar and Tigray has dropped by 50 to 90
percent in some parts and failed completely
in others. It is estimated that hundreds of
thousands of livestock have already been
lost.

Saving Ethiopians from Ethiopia By Lalisaa Hiikaa

Could it be true that democracy is not the
priority of these governments as claimed?
Western leaders appear to speak strongly
about human rights and democratic freedom, but actions tell a different story entirely
Ethiopian Government: Terrorist??

Ethiopians
In my previous article, Refugees in The
United States, I appealed to Ethiopians to
rally together in attempt to save Ethiopian
immigrants detained here in the state of
Florida. The Oromo Community of Tampa Bay, Ethiopian community members,
and Kefyalew Fekade of Miami, organized
a massive campaign to save these desperate
individuals from deportation.
On behalf of the Oromo Community and
Ethiopian Community members, I would
like to thank www.zehabesha.com for
promptly publishing the previous article
Refugees in United States. I also thank
Mr. Tamagn Beyene and Dr. Aklog Birara
of Global Alliance, Mr. Shibabaw of Tampa,
and the Odaa Self Help Association members for the quick and critical financial support they pledged/provided in support of
this cause.
I am confident that many of our people have
been made aware of the 16 individuals currently detained in the Broward Transitional Center and Krome Detention Facility in
Florida. The situation has been extensively
reported on ESAT radio, OMN (Oromia
Media Network), and in online publications. Tragically, countless Ethiopians in
similar plights have been deported in the
past, facing horrific consequences. We call
on the US government and international
humanitarian organizations to investigate
the state of these individuals, and hold the
Ethiopian government accountable for violations of their human rights. The hope
is that the group currently in Florida will
avoid deportation and the fate of their predecessors. I continue to believe that we have
a moral obligation to stand up in support of
our countrymen as they face persecution,
detention, and death from the Ethiopian
government if deported.
Ethiopia
The Ethiopian government is controlled by
incompetent, unqualified dummies who
obtained their positions based on loyalty
to the TPLF junta and EPDRF. Dedication
to the rights of its people and enforcement
of laws to protect its citizens does not exist;
as everyone from doctors to students; from
farmers to businessmen; have been terrorized in their own country for the last 25

years. Those in power are taking the country

on extremely dangerous path in order to satisfy their personal greed and financial gain.
Educated citizens are barred from key government positions, and blind followers are
recruited into the military to kill their own
people. The regime is both dangerous and
powerful, committing terrorist acts against
Ethiopian citizens both at home and abroad.
Western Hypocrisy
It is difficult, if not impossible, to believe that
the US government is not aware of the fate
awaiting Ethiopian citizens seeking asylum
if deported back to their country. In the most
recent election, the current government of
mannequin prime minister, Haile Mariam
Desalegn, claimed victory with 100% of the
votes. To any observer, it is clear that opposition is silenced, nonexistent, and there is
no democratic process or governance in that
country. During a recent interview, US National Security Adviser Susan Rice couldnt
help but laugh when questioned about legitimacy of the election, then illustrating how
ridiculous the notion of fairness is within
the Ethiopian government. However, the
European Union and US Governments were
largely silent during the elections; instead
choosing to celebrate a peaceful election.
President Obamas visit to Ethiopia in 2015
was largely protested by Oromo and Ethiopian Americans; fearing that without
addressing human rights issues, the visit
simply legitimizes the authoritarian regime and its atrocious acts. During the joint
press conference in Addis Ababa on 27 July
2015, President Obama described the Ethiopian regime as a a democratically elected
government, while Human Rights organizations have extensively reported on the
arbitrary arrests of opposition leaders and
journalist. None of these issues were discussed during the presidents visit in which
he toasted Champagne with offending government officials. Indeed, billions of dollars
continue to be given to Ethiopia from their
US, UK, and European allies for aid, seemingly in support of a regime that is allowed
to render its terrorized citizens voiceless. By
allowing the horror to continue, Western
governments are simply enabling and arming the regime while ignoring laughing at
the victims subjected to the atrocities of the
regime.

According to the 16 Ethiopian detainees,

Ethiopian government agents are terrorizing them without consequence from ICE or
DHS officials. We would like to ask the Justice and State Departments to launch an investigation into this matter. While the Ethiopian regime kills, tortures, and displaces
its helpless people at home, it then works
tirelessly to recover those who flee from its
tyranny. In contrast, there are countries that
go so far as to hire attorneys and help their
nationals secure freedom.
The other example of this regimes terrorist activity is the case of Mr. Andargachew
Tsige, a UK citizen illegally kidnapped,
abused and tortured. Mr. Tsige continues to
be held nearly 2 years later without consequence to the Ethiopian government. If Mr.
Tsige was a citizen of Russia or Israel, Ethiopia wouldnt dare oppose demands for his
release.
Our People
Sadly, the Ethiopian junta has been successful in its campaign to divide the people
of Ethiopia into clashing segments. By instigating conflict, the regime ensures that
interethnic groups do not unite, leaving
them weaker than if they rallied together.
According to Reuters News Agency, Ethiopian officials said on Saturday that gunmen
from South Sudan had crossed the border,
killed 140 people and abducted more than
39 children. The Ethiopian government has
no regard for the lives of these poor citizens.
As recently as 2015, government security
forces burned down businesses owned by
Amharas in the Oromo region and blamed
it on Oromos; inciting hate and distrust between the groups. Discord is then encouraged using propaganda on TV, radio and
other media- spreading deceptively democratic messages spewing hatred and fear.
To reward the Ethiopian regime with ethnic
dispute is to augment its power to terrorize. When Oromo farmers are evicted and

forced to become beggars on their own land,

Amhara people sit idly by. When Amhara
people face similar injustice, Oromo people
also turn away. With such discord, the regime can easily crush any uprising, and feels
confident that the groups will continue to
allow each other to suffer violence and maltreatment. If Oromo and Amhara citizens
came together, their objections would come
from a much stronger opposing force.
Oromo people from around the world are
gathering in Washington DC on April 19th
for the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission briefing. This campaign was organized
to push human rights issues and stop the
madness in this Ethiopia. This cause affects
all Ethiopians; not only the Oromo who
have been active thus far. The Woyane reign
of terror cannot be stopped until all Ethiopians stand together and demand justice for
all.
Call To Action
Today we fight for the 16 endangered individuals we have identified in Florida. There
are surely more in need of assistance across
the United States. I am calling on all Ethiopians to come together, to unite, to use every
resource available- and locate and support
our countrymen in need across the US. I
would encourage courageous individuals
to initiate their own campaigns to save our
people not only in the US, but throughout
the world. We have seen ISIS executions of
Ethiopians in Libya. Shame on us! It is obvious that our government is incompetent;
but at least we, the Diaspora, who have freedoms our fellow Ethiopians do not, should
come together and speak for those in need.
We should lobby the UN and peace-loving
countries to stand with us and help resolve
the issues in Ethiopia. Our mission is to save
Ethiopians from Ethiopias thuggish regime.
For this campaign, contributions of any
amount are gratefully accepted, and can be

when six of her children fell ill, as a measles outbreak wracked the small community that had been home to her all of her
life. Weakened and already underweight,
her children were at high risk of the illness.
Save the Childrens outreach teams brought
Habiba and her family to Fedeto, where the
children underwent a month long course of
treatment to bring them to recovery.

The complexities of this crisis go beyond

the very real human need I saw playing out
in Fedeto. Were it faced with this drought
alone, the Government of Ethiopia would
have a heady, but manageable task. Sadly,
all indications of the climate change trajectory suggest that this is not an isolated
case of drought, but rather the paradigm for
what is yet to come.
The Government is faced now with dealing with three challenges: the emergency
needs of the 10 million people facing food
shortage; preparing to respond to the next
drought, which could come at any time,
including by ring-fencing funding so it
can be released fast, at the first signs of
drought, to address critical needs and prevent escalation; and developing a longer
term sustainable plan for adapting to this
changing environment and ensuring livelihoods and communities are given the skills
and resources for much needed change.
The funding and resourcing must be available to take on all of these tasks, if any of
them are to truly succeed.
Ethiopia offers economic hope to the horn
of Africa it is one of the most stable countries in the region, attracting significant
overseas investment. It provides a haven
to 750,000 refugees, the largest amount in
Africa, many of whom are fleeing conflict
in neighbouring countries. It is critical that
we recognize the value in having a stable
country in this region.
The International community invested
heavily in bringing Ethiopia to a point
where it can lead a self-sustaining economy, capable of withstanding crisis. This
included the development of all the early
warning systems to identify risk and to
stop emergencies like the current food crisis escalating into a catastrophe. It is the
failing of us all, if we ignore the sound of
the alarm bells ringing now.
