Cloned SPM Question (Paper 1)

The diagram shows five triangles drawn on a grid of squares.

A
P

B
D

Which of the triangles, A, B, C or D, is not an image of triangle P under a rotation?

Solution
Under a rotation, the orientation of the object and the image remains the same. By labelling the
corresponding vertices of the object and the image, it can be seen from the diagram that the
orientation of triangle A is changed.

X Z
XYZ is anticlockwise. The A Y XYZ is clockwise.
orientation has changed
Y P

Z
XYZ is clockwise.
X C

Y X X Y
B
D

Thus, triangle A is not an image of triangle P under a rotation.

Cloned SPM Question (Paper 1)

In the diagram, PXYZ is the image of the square TSPR under an enlargement.

X P

S T
Q

The centre of the enlargement and its scale factor are

Centre of
Scale Factor
Enlargement
1
A P
4

B P 4

1
C Q
4

D Q 4

Solution
From the length of each side of the image and the length of the corresponding side of the object,
it can be seen that the ratio is 4 : 1. Thus, the scale factor of the enlargement is 4.

If P is the centre of the enlargement, then the scale factor must be negative since the image and
the object are on opposite sides of point P.

Thus, point Q is the centre of the enlargement.

Answer: D
