History
We condecorate may 1st as the international day of the laborer movement
as a tribute to the martyrs of Chicago.
This is because on may 1, 1886, more than 200 thousand chicago laborers
started a protest for a working day of eight hours, under the motto 8 hours
for work, 8 hours of rest and 8 hours of recreation.

This protest lasted 4 days and a lot of anarchist workers were wounded and
executed for their participation in the protest.
A decisive fact in this story is that in Haymarket Square,Chicago an explosive
projectile was launched by the authorities killing a policeman and leaving several
wounded. This provoked the addition of the police to the protests.

In Chile and the world

In our country on 1931 the president carlos Ibaez del Campo signed a
decree which declares public holiday on May 1, as a tribute to the worker
day. And in 1955, in Vatican Square, Pope Po XII declared, before 300
thousand people, as of 1 May as the day of St. Joseph the Worker.

Curious fact
In the United States this date is not celebrated. They celebrate Laborer Day on
the first Monday of September since 1882 and it is organized by the Noble
Order of the Knights of Labor, because president Grover Cleveland feared that
the May date would strengthen the socialist movement in the United States.
