Cell Regulation

Why do cells continue to divide?

Body growth:
tissues and organs
To replace or renew tissues:
promotes health

Controls
Cell division is highly controlled
Cell growth and division depend on protein signals and
other environmental signals.
Proteins control the phases of the cell cycle
Signals that control cell growth and division can come
from surrounding cells, organs, proteins.
A lack of nutrients can affect the cell cycle

Checkpoints
Feedback signals at key checkpoints in the cell cycle
can delay or trigger the next phase of the cell cycle.
There are 3 main checkpoints in the cell cycle:
G checkpoint, G checkpoint , and mitosis checkpoint

Checkpoints
G checkpoint controls whether the cell will divide
G checkpoint makes sure DNA was copied properly
Mitosis checkpoint signals tell the cell to exit mitosis

Cancer
Cancer a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled
growth and spread of abnormal cells.
Loss of control
-responds improperly to signals resulting in tumors

Development
-beginning tumors, malignant tumors, and metastasis

Treatment
-chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy

Prevention
- avoid UV radiation and harmful chemicals
