Program Notes

Written especially for Duo Entendre, the piece, Visions de la nuit, is a work that captures
both the beautiful and sinister characters that haunt the night.

There is something about the night sky that is profoundly confronting and mysterious and
alluring all in one. One needn't be religious or go to church. One need only turn their gaze
to the night sky to feel a sense of spirituality and wonder. But the night is also a time that
has long been associated with fear. Something about dark does cause a tingle of fear for
most people. Think of the witching hour, when evil creatures would come out of hiding and
do their evil deeds.

So on one hand, the night is a thing of beauty and mystery, however, it is also harbours a
sinister side.

Visions de la nuit contrasts a sweeping lyricism with sonorities that evoke the macabre. It
is a piece that straddles the realms between dissonance and consonance; lyrical and
percussive; light and dark.
