Discusssion
Based on the result of the experiment that was done, all of the objective were fulfilled.
Part A is the emulsion test to measure the two sample fluid emulsion stability and oil wetting
capability. Emulsion tester equipped with two parallel flat plate electrodes that was submerge
into the sample. Increased sinusoidal alternating voltage steadily was applied into both
sample in order to observe the resistivity.
The result obtained for part A is oil based mud has a higher Electrical Stability (ES)
than water based mud. The ES value represent mud emulsion stability. Water is a better
conductor than oil therefore the result obtained is absolutely correct. If the mud has a good
emulsion rate, the value of ES displayed is lower. A mud with a high degree of emulsion
stability is generally smooth and shiny and does not adhere to the stirring spindle of a mixer.
By a contrast, a mud with a low degree of emulsion stability is dull and grainy and show a
marked tendency to adhere to the spindle.
The next part of the experiment was to determine the liquid and solid content of
water-based mud. The result obtained is that volume of water and oil are 44 mL and 1 mL
respectively when the wetting agent was added. At the end of the experiment it was measured
that the solid extracted from the water-based mud is 6.38 g. Proper control of the mud content
is very important to designate the mud to have the desired density and viscosity.
