JOURNAL ENTRY # 5 REFLECTING ON MY MICROTEACHING SESSION

This journal describes my thoughts about my microteaching experience. When I heard
about this session I was apprehensive on three fronts namely, being recorded, teaching my fellow
teachers and lastly teaching a full lesson in under 10 minutes. At this point I was accustomed to
teaching a class with my colleagues as the audience but the thought of teaching my colleagues
themselves was a thought I could not fathom. I remembered asking my wife, How can I teach
people who know the work already? However, I decided to just do what I have been taught to
do and treat them as students. This renewed assurance made me not dwell on being taped,
however, the task of delivering and evaluating a lesson still loomed.
In addressing the lesson, I stuck to the basics, engage, explore, explain, elaborate and
evaluate. I did the lesson on sublimation and in the end I was able to achieve all my objectives in
the 10 minutes. From this session I learnt that in 10 minutes a complete high quality lesson can
be achieved and all this can be done choosing appropriate student centred activities.
On viewing the lesson on tape the week after, I was stunned to see myself in front the
classroom. I saw some actions in my body language and speech that I never would have knew
existed. This session was priceless as I would have had my teaching assessed by others but never
by myself and by assessing myself I learnt a lot more than I would have by taking critiques

solely from my peers. This was a great session and I hope to try and improve my faults to aid in
my transformation as an educator.

Glad it was so powerful. Its a revealing experience to see yourself from the eyes of the students.
