JOURNAL ENTRY # 7 REFLECTING ON MY 20% TEACHING PRACTICE

This journal entry describes my reflections after being assessed officially for the first time
on my teaching practice. I would have thought previously during the course of my reflections
that this session would have been the one in which my journal entry would have been riddled
with descriptions of me being nervous prior to my 20%. However, this was not the case. I was
cool and collected before as at the end of this diped journey I had gained the confidence in
myself that I was capable of delivering a quality lesson.
I utilized the flipped classroom in this session along with an inductive approach to
teaching about the topic levers. During the lesson, I focussed on doing what I did well, as well as
correcting my flaws that I identified during my teaching practice process. I improved my
questioning and allowed my students enough time to answer and express their thoughts about the
lesson. Students were actively engaged and I was sure that after the lesson they enjoyed
themselves as well as learnt a lot. This was evident from the peer questioning session I conducted
whereby the students developed their own questions to ask their fellow groups. After the session
was completed students even turned to me and identified part of the door as being a lever, a
testament that they had taken what they learnt form the lesson to their real lives.

After the session, I was complemented by Dr. Kaloo about my lesson. I felt good
knowing that I had finally reached the point I envisioned prior to starting this diped process. I felt
a sense of self-pride and my efficacy increased dramatically when Dr. Kaloo told my Principal
that, Darrell did a great lesson, and also that, Darrell is a great teacher. This comment
enforced the fact that I had changed from when I started. I had now become the guide on the
side, and transitioned into what I hoped I would have become. I had a renewed philosophy of
teaching and my pedagogy was transformed into one of constructivism. The tools of my trade
had changed from the whiteboard to weebly websites and my classroom had changed from a
lecture session to one full of activity and discovery. I had indeed been though the metamorphosis
process of being transformed from a teacher to an educator.
Yes you have Darrell. You just blossomed with creativity.
