The Roaring Twenties

There was a new mass culture that erupted


all across America

There was a rise in the purchase of


consumer goods

20s introduced the Jazz Age

During the prohibition

The Great Migration occurred

The new woman arose in the 20s

Historical Relevance

The 20s had major success in mass production


and the number of consumers skyrocketed

Henry Ford helped speed along consumer rates


by selling automobiles, which were very popular

More luxuries were available and affordable,


such as radios, automobiles, and silent movies

While businesses boomed, these events led to


the economys crash and the Great Depression
that occurred in the 30s-40s

Stock markets increased, and got so high that


they crashed, leading to the Great Depression

The Great Depression

A catastrophic event that occurred in the 20s


was the Great Depression

A majority of Americans bought stock at the


time, which lead to the stock market crashing

This led to many people being unemployed

They had terrible working conditions and


worked on little pay

The 1920s was the start of the Great Depression,


where $14 billion was lost in one day

Harvest Gypsies

A collection of articles John Steinbeck wrote for


the newspaper during the Great Depression

The collection of articles brought attention to


the terrible working conditions that migrants
faced

These migrants craved better conditions, but


could not stop working because there wasnt
enough money to support them

Harvest Gypsies told us of how life was like for


the migrants before and after the Great
Depression

Of Mice and Men

in the 20's people were still being discriminated for


the color of their skin- Crooks is treated and talked
to differently because of his race

Events of the 20s lead to the Great Depression,


which led to the impoverished lifestyles some of
these characters had to live

Automobiles became popular in the 20s thanks to


Henry Ford - George and Lennie were taken to the
farm with an automobile

workers on farm couldnt quit job because they


wouldnt have enough money to sustain themselves

Sweet Thursday

This novel had traces of the 20s in it

The 20s were after WWI, some characters were


mentioned to have gone to war

The prohibition was in place, Doc, one of the main


characters had to buy beer illegally

Since in the 20s commercial goods became more


popular, stores like JC Penny and Safeway were
mentioned

The radio was mentioned as well
