LEADERSHIP

Big bear began to establish himself as a leader in the late

1850s and early 1960s. In 1871 he was the chief of the prairie
river people and by 1874, he was the leader of a camp with
around 520 people. He refused to sign treaty number 6.
poundmaker was a headman of the river people bands in
1876, spoke at the treaty number 6 negotiaions and was a
spokesperson for a group critical of the treaty. He became
chief of a reserve with 182 followers in 1879

UNITY

Big bear tried to create a political confederation of indian

bands and from 1878 to 1880 he traveled through the
Canadian north-west and Montana to unite the bands. In the
late 18802 his efforts focused on cree bands and attempting
to create an indian terrority in the northwest.in june 1884, big
bear hosted a thirst dance at the poundmaker reserve which
was attended by over 2000 people. The north west mounted
police distuped the event and violence between the indian
bands and the 90 man police force was prevented by big bear
and poundmaker keeping the peace.

OBSTACLES

Big bear began to lose influence ober the bands warrior

society during the winter of 1884-1885. he surrendered at fort
carlton on july 2,brought on trail on September 11th and was
found guilty of treason-felony. He was sentenced to three
years instony mountain penitentiary. Released in febuary 1887
due to poor health he setteled on poundmakers reserve where
he died 17th of January 1888. poundmaker was also charged of
treason-felony and was sent to stony mountain penitentiary
for three years. He served only 1 year before being released
due to poor health and died 4 months later while visiting his
adopted father on the blackfoot reserve

WHO IS GREATER?

Both of these leaders were great due to the fact they were non
violent and tried to band all the indian bands together to make
a difference. Even after being oppressed they still stayed
peaceful and kept fighting for their cause until their deaths
