About the Institution


Anna University BIT Campus, Tiruchirappalli,
has been established by the Government of Tamil
Nadu as a Technical Institution at Tiruchirappalliknown as Rock Fort city, with rich cultural
heritage and home to many reputed educational
institutions. The institution is established with a
view to impart quality student centered technical
education, so as to produce proven technocrats
and to strive hard for continuous development
and improvement in learning, research and
developmental activities. Teaching, Research and
Extension services are carried through the
Departments and Centers of the Institution. The
institution also works towards fostering
partnership with academic and industrial experts
to provide quality education and opportunities for
entrepreneurial development by providing handson training in the frontier areas. BIT has carved a
niche for itself in providing technical education in
the disciplines that are unique in our country.
Aiming at excellence, the institution offers UG,
PG and research programmes in various
disciplines.
About the Department
The Department of Biotechnology, a DST-FIST
sponsored department, offers B. Tech., M. Tech.,
M.S. (by Research) and Ph.D., degree
programmes. The department has made rapid
strides in academics and research. The best efforts
are put in to motivate students to enter into
modern vistas of research and development. The
quality research programmes addressing topics of
current global interest synchronizing with
emerging trends are envisaged. The department
has a vision to promote and strengthen the
research activities in interdisciplinary fields and a
number of research projects are vigorously being
carried out in areas like RNAi technology,
f

nanobiotechnology, biofuels, cancer biology,


genetic engineering, plant biotechnology,
bioremediation and bioinformatics. Several
research projects funded by State / Central
Government agencies such as TNSCST, DBT,
DST, DRDO, ICMR, MNRE and UGC are being
operated by the faculties.
About the Programme
TEQIP II sponsored two days workshop
comprising of eight plenary sessions. Upon
attending the workshop, the participants will
have
gained
an
understanding
of
phytomedicines, which are currently being
commercialized for the treatment of several
diseases. They will be familiar with concepts
pertaining to tissue culture, separation of
phytochemicals, molecular docking studies
and patenting. Participants will be exposed to
various contemporary areas of research in the
herbal drug development and their
applications. They will acquire knowledge
from the facility for communication with
experts in various areas of drug development.
