DINOMITE!
When fashion director Juliana
Schiavinatto was planning
the shoots for this issue, she
had one request. I want to
shoot with real dinosaurs,
she said. I like the irony and
juxtaposition of exploring
the future by looking to the
past. Any ideas on where we
could shoot? Give me a
few days, I said. I then called
the Royal Tyrrell Museum of
Palaeontology in Drumheller,
Alta., to see if theyd be keen
on having their world-famous
dinos featured in a fashion
spread. It was a first for
themand definitely a first
for us, shooting our model
Rachel MacKnight beside
the famous Albertosaurus
sarcophagus. For a whimsical dose of inspiration, dont
miss Roar on page 93.

ven before Fernanda

Ly hit the Louis Vuitton
runway wearing a
leather skirt, pink moto
jacket and anime-esque
tiara, Nicolas Ghesquire set
the scene for his futuristicinspired collection with a
voice-over soundtrack from
the Minecraft trailer. Lets
go wherever you want to
go...build anything you
want. Build your own little
community. Protect yourself
with the strongest armour that you can craft.
Nobody can tell you what you can or cannot
do. With no rules to follow, this adventure is up
to you. Ghesquire kicked off his fashion adventure with a trippy light show that felt like
we were being sucked into a virtual world inhabited by manga warriors with a kick-ass
sense of style. Its really about travel to the
frontier of the digital world, he told reporters
backstage. I love the spirit of the house and its
history, but Im also here to look forward. He
wasnt the only designer in a futuristic mood.
Similar ideas were on show at Chanel, Edun,
Prada and Maison Margiela. But were these
collections prescient in the way that Paco
Rabannes were in the late 60s, or were they
merely flirting with the concept through clever
styling? Clara Young explores this in Practical
Magic (page 86). Rabanne, who, along with
Pierre Cardin and Andr Courrges, launched
the idea of fashion futurism, interestingly never
considered his work in such a prophetic light.
We can only be decadentyou copy the past
or are contemporary, he famously told The
New York Times. Or, as Young suggests, he
clearly had no issues with the future often being
a rendition of the past. Thats something
that our cover subject, rapper Iggy Azalea, is

certainly hoping isnt the case. After a difficult

yearin which she found herself embroiled in
a series of nasty race-inspired social-media
feudsshe is ready to move forward with her
much-anticipated second album, Digital
Distortion. Azalea told features editor Aliyah
Shamsher that she would like to Men in Black
memory-erase 2015. After reading Iggy
Reboot (page 64), you may have a slightly
different perspective on how things went down
for the controversial rap artist. We live in a
digital age of distortion where were all distorting each other and distorting ourselves and our
perception of who we all are, and none of it is
really accurate anymore, she says. Azalea suggests that her latest work is moodier but her
desire was to create music that makes her fans
happy. While we were putting this futurethemed issue together, I got into the habit of
checking my daily horoscope by our long-time
astrologist, Georgia Nicols. For today, she told
me that there might be a few power struggles
over how money is being spent but cautioned
me not to take the bait because tomorrow is
going to be a lovely day. It was a fitting footnote to this months theme, because the chance
of happier, lovely days explains our enduring
faith in, and fascination with, the future.

THIS MONTHS BEST

ELLE Canada is my perfect escape. While most of us lead lives that revolve around
juggling a full-time job, cooking, cleaning, getting kids to and from school, supervising
homework and carpooling to hockey games, dance lessons and play datesthe list
goes ontheres nothing like being able to get lost looking at the beautiful fashion on
your pages. I can close my eyes and imagine the possibilities of what my runway

look would be. Imagination is a wonderful thing!

THREES A CHARM
I love that you

love that her mission in

DEAR DIARY
I really enjoyed
your interview with
Gigi Hadid [ELLE
Celebrity, November
2015]. I was struck by
her comment that it
is important to create
relationships because
relationships are what
create opportunity.
I was also touched
by Signed, Sealed,
Delivered [ELLE
Trend, November
2015]. I found two
diaries in the woods

last summer, one dated

1976 and the other
1995. The woman
wrote in them every day
for years. I found the
name of one of her sons
in the diaries, so I sent
them to him. Finding
these inspired me to
start writing a journal
myself. Perhaps some
strangers will read them
one day and pick up
their own pens. DENISE

PJ PARTY
I really enjoyed getting a
sneak peek at the spring
trends from the Fashion
Week runways [ELLE

Finally, that laid-back
PJs look will be a
fashion statement. Cant wait
to rock satin and
silky fabrics from
day to evening.
MARIYA-KVITLANA,
MISSISSAUGA, ONT.

FASHION MOOD
I have to remark on
one of the photos in
your February fashion
spread [Glorious &
Free]. You showcase

the designer Helder

Diego, but very little
of the clothing can be
seenthat is my first
frustration. Second,
there is a young model
gently caressing her lips
with a french fry and
theres an uneaten meal
in front of her, which
has nothing to do with
the subject. Last, she
is sitting in such a way
that the only part of
the outfit seen is the
sparkly shorts between
her legs. SAMANTHA,
GUELPH, ONT.

When I imagine the future of fashion, Im less inclined to dream up glow-in-the-dark techno-raver uniforms

Keep the colour palette restrained (were loving the

As is inevitable when youre talking to the star of a horror movie, the

conversation first turns to things Lutz
is afraid ofopen water, being in a
forest in the dark and bees (ever since
she was swarmed while on a scooter in
Greece)and then it turns to the things
she doesnt fear (at least not anymore),
like free-falling out of a plane: I was
really scared of flying when I was little,
but I recently went skydiving, and it was
the best experience of my life. Youre
present like youve never felt before.
Youre just thinking of you being in the
air and feeling the wind on your body
and your face. And next, with the kind
of relentless optimism that America was
built on, Lutz names the thing that scares
most of us silly: what lies ahead. Its not
useful to panic about the future. I have
goals, but I dont expect things. I just live
every day and see what life brings me.

ust when you thought it was safe

to watch cursed videotapes again,
theres a new movie in The Ring
franchise coming to a screen near you
and starring newcomer Matilda Lutz.*
A sunny 24-year-old with the barest
hint of a European lilt, Lutz, the daughter of a famed Italian fashion photographer, is unashamedly living the
American dream. If you say youre an
actor in Italy, they kind of laugh in your
faceits like its not a job, explains
Lutz, who moved to Los Angeles two
years ago. When I came here, I just fell
in love with the fact that you can do anything you want. I felt like I could really,
really be myself. So I called my mom and
said I wasnt coming home! (Lutz had
been in the United States on a monthlong break from studying science in
Milan.) Despite having done a bit of acting in Italy, Lutz had to go through the
usual Angeleno trial of actress by night,
waitress by day until landing her breakout part in this years Rings.

Meet Canadas newest rising star.

THE PHONE CALL When my manager
called and said, Do you know
who Jesse Owens is? I recognized
the name, but I didnt really understand his accomplishments. When I
looked him up and read the script, I
immediately fell in love and told my
manager I had to play him.
THE PREP I was in Atlanta shooting
Selma, and every off day Id train at
Georgia Tech with the track-andfield coach. I had to learn to run fast,
and I had to learn to run like Jesse,
so I studied his form and how he
looked when he did it.

HIT LIST
What were talking
about this month.

THE PART James Cleveland Jesse

Owens, track-and-field legend.

THE PERSON Jesse was a humble man

who didnt realize the barriers he
would break down going to Germany
in the 30s. He didnt see colour; he
just saw the love of the sport.

THE PLAYER Rising star (and Toronto

native) Stephan James, 22, whose
previous credits include Selma and
The Book of Negroes.

THE PURPOSE This is a timely film because it reminds us of how far weve
come; it also helps us understand why
we cant afford to go backwards.

1. The 14-year wait for the sequel was all her fault. I always knew a
sequel would involve Toula as a parent, and in reality it was very difficult
for me to become pregnant. Can you imagine a press tour with me having gone through all these fertility treatments on a quest to be a mom and
people are like, Well, wheres your baby? [Vardalos now has a daughter.]
2. The film has a very simple message. No matter what your age is, no
one is going to give you what you need unless you ask for it. 3. Its a family affair. My parents, brother and sisters were background actors in the
wedding-reception scene. We played music and joined hands, and I had my
cast family dancing with my real family. 4. She couldnt neglect her BFFs.
I wrote parts for my two closest girlfriendsTannis Burnett and Kathryn
Greenwoodand they play my nemeses in the movie. We walked around
set like, Were in a movie together! Youget us a smoothie. But were so
Canadian that then were like, Wait, let me help you make that. h

Singer Santigold talks the difference between performance and reality.

n the day we caught up

with Brooklyn-based
Santi White, better
known as genre-bending indie musician Santigold, NYC was in the bulls
eye of a massive snowstorm, but the
39-year-old singer was easy ridin
on her way into Manhattan, joking
about how her survival plan involved
getting a satellite phone like the
one I had when I climbed Mount
Kilimanjaro. (Santigold was part
of Summit on the Summit in 2010,
when celebrities like Lupe Fiasco and
Jessica Biel tackled the mountain to
raise awareness about clean-water

by the occasional sound of her cars

way through traffic.

YOUR THIRD ALBUM, OUT NOW, IS

CALLED 99. WHY? Making this rec-

ord was about making art out of

the reality that Im a brand and a
product. I have to figure out ways
to constantly sell myself and put up
this facade of a perfect life, a perfect
artist. Its taking a snapshot of where
we are as a culture and talking about
it in a satirical and playful way.
ITS LIKE WERE AT A PLACE WITH SOCIAL MEDIA WHERE EVERYONENOT

Youre marketing a retouched

Peoples self-worth and identity are
measured by how many likes they
get, and theyre seeing all these pictures that are Facetuned and Photo
Wondered and theyre like, I dont

figure out! Thats the job of art: to

be a mirror and hold up the current
reality of culture so we can take a
step back. I dont think theres that
much reflection happening anymore
in societyeven artists arent sitting
and thinking, because we spend 70
percent of our time marketing our
art so we can make a living. What
if I had more time to spend on my
music and my art and my writing?
Instead, Im fighting for attention
because of this ADD culture. I just

DOES YOUR ALBUM OFFER ANY SOLUTIONS? I really believe in the power

of the individual. I also just want to

point out that there is something
very wrong with where we are. Im
not trying to be super-political, but
in America were at this place where
its very real that we might be electing a TV star [Donald Trump] to be
president. And I think thats from
people not knowing the difference
between a performance and what
would really happen if that person

people are making a distinction between virtual and real anymore, and
thats a scary place. SARAH LAING

Monica Heisey has

a new crystal-clear
take on life.

m into crystals now. Im sure I dont need to make

this announcementyouve probably all gathered
from Instagrambut sometimes you just have to
shout your bliss from the rooftops, or at least make it
Facebook Official. So, without further ado, ladies and
gentlemen, Mom and Dad, close friends and that guy I
met when I worked at a restaurant one summer whom I
cant seem to remember to unfriend: Im into crystals now!
This has been a really exciting journey for me. It began
over a week ago, when I started following a bunch of
California-based gift shops on Tumblr. Frankly, it was love
at first saginite. It wasnt long before I was seeing crystals
everywhere: at hip vintage stores and artisanal ceramic
workshops, dangling delicately from the swanlike necks
of hip urban florists. The pull of the crystals seemed omnipresentthe shining sacred rocks purifying the air and
making me think Cool.
I was drawn to them by a power you might call mystical. Suddenly, my energy was focused on a priority in
my life that hadnt previously been there: healing my aura
in a way that made me look very, very cool. I started with
a smooth, curved orb of rose quartz. Im not a sucker
I didnt fall for that cutesy carved-into-a-heart-shapeand-then-marked-up-thirty-dollars bit. Oh, no. I paid a

62

reasonable $20 for a hunk of pink rock designed to attract

unconditional love and self-love. And, you know, I think
it worked! I definitely love myself more in my new life as
a Person Whos into Crystals than I did in my old life as
Someone Less Cool. It has been very healing.
My next purchase was a classic: Owning a large hunk
of amethyst brought peace, stability and psychic sobriety to my life without my even having to learn what
psychic sobriety means! Crystals have really opened my
eyes to the energies emanating from nature and the fact
that you can just buy cool stuff if you want to seem cooler. In the past, I used to worry about not looking trendy
and in the know on social media; I would overthink it and
work myself into a frenzy before posting a desperate picture of my facewithout even a hint of impressive rocks.
Now, I just get a manicure and then reach for a piece of
hematite and hold it in a beam of sunlight against a white
wall. Simply holding the anti-stress stone blocks all that
negative energy, so I can take a mystical photo and post it
along with a bunch of shooting-star emojis.
The skeptics among you might be thinking You sound
like a caftan-wearing, ros-drinking Los Angeles divorcee. To which I say Thank you, that is exactly what Im
going for! In my apartment, Ive even set up a number of
different altars to bohemian-looking thin women who
probably own crystals and are therefore heroes.
The citrine-head lifestyle is not for everyone, but it has
impacted me in ways I cant really explain. Is it the healing
properties of these magical stones? Is it that I have discovered you can literally buy free-spiritedness? Is it that lapis
lazuli is the most beautiful and expensive paperweight Ive
ever owned? Thats not for me to say. I am a princess of
the New Age, and there is no turning back. Now, can I
interest you in a tourmaline?

REBOO
Rapper Iggy Azalea as youve never heard her before:
vulnerable, humble and ready to start again.
By Aliyah Shamsher Photographs by Max Abadian

IGGY AZALEA MAY BE ONE of the most polarizing figures in the music industry today. Since releasing her
first album, The New Classic, in 2014, the 25-year-old
Australian has proudly defended her right to be a white
female rapper. In doing so, she has amassed a legion of
devoted fans who have been interacting on social media
with the musician almost daily since her early days producing mixtapes. Shortly after releasing The New Classic, her
singles Fancy and Problem held the number one and
number two spots simultaneously on the Billboard Hot
100 chart. (FYI, no artist has been able to achieve this feat
since the Beatles.) She has also received industry praise over
the past two years in the form of four Grammy nominations, two American Music Awards and three Billboard
Music Awards.
As all of this was happening, however, an emotionally
charged debate about race, gender and the socio-political
state of the hip-hop scene was also heating up. By mid2015, the conversation engulfed Azalea when her public
feud with rapper Azealia Banks went viral. In the wake
of protests in Ferguson, Mo., New York and Baltimore,
Md., Banks called her out for not commenting, tweeting her

Black Culture is cool, but black issues sure arent, huh?

The widely respected rapper Q-Tip jumped in shortly after
with a series of tweets aimed at Azalea, informing her about
the history of hip hop, while the hacker group Anonymous
threatened to leak nudes of the musician if she didnt apologize for misappropriating black culture.
There were also the weirder controversies, like when
Azalea publicly fought with the pizza chain Papa Johns on
Twitter after she gave a delivery man her phone number
and began receiving calls from his family members. By the
end of last year, Azalea had cancelled her tour, abandoned
social media and retreated from the spotlight.
But on the eve of her second album release, Digital
Distortion, Azalea says shes ready for another go-round
at the rap game. This time, however, much of her bravado
(which fuelled the controversies) seems to have faded.
Instead, shes in a more reflective and even regretful mood.
Over the phone late one Friday evening from her L.A.
home, Azalea openly discussed her conflicted relationship
with social media, her unapologetic love of rap and her
much-talked-about upcoming wedding to Los Angeles
Lakers player Nick Young. h

IGGYS BACKSTORY
Azalea was born Amethyst
Amelia Kelly in Sydney, Australia,
but when she was a child, her
family moved to Mullumbimby,
on the east coast, north of Byron
Bay. I come from a town that
has 3,000 people in it and two
streets. No one wears high
heelsin fact, people often dont
even wear shoes. Its not weird
to be in the supermarket and
see someone without shoes.
When she was 11, her grandparents took her and her sister
on a trip to California, which
Azalea describes as life changing. It was just so ridiculous and
crazy. It was like everything I had
seen in the movies. There are no
limits in America, and I like that
because Im a very ridiculous
person. Rap music came into
her life shortly after, and by 16
she had dropped out of school
and decided that the United
States was where she needed
to be. She landed a job cleaning
houses with the goal of saving
enough money to get to Miami.
I basically spent my last year in
Australia being psychotically obsessed with saving money to go
to America. It was very planned
out: How much money do I need
to get there? How much money
will I need for food? Azalea
has now lived in the United
States for almost a decade and
currently lives in L.A. with her
fianc, Los Angeles Laker Nick
Young. Theres a lot going on
hereand its way more complex
than when I was 14 and living
in Australia. But I still love it, and
I will live here forever. Its complicated, but its worth it.

You must be deep into wedding planning. There are so many

rumours circulating about what could possibly happen on
the big day.... I know! My mom even asked me if I was

having two weddings and lots of horsesI dont know

who wrote that. And to be honest, that sounds like a really
trashy wedding that belongs on a reality show. I can tell you
right now that my wedding is going to be pretty boring
compared to what everyone has been writing about it.
Its not the first time online accounts of your life have been
more fiction than fact. Back in February 2015, you said you
were stepping away from social media and that your management was taking over your accounts. Are you back now?

Im back. But this time Ive given myself some rules so I

dont get too sucked in again. For me, what happened, not
just on social media but with everything in my career, was
like a whirlwind. I started to feel like I was losing control
over my own life. And it wasnt just how people began
perceiving me or the stories that were written about me
it was everything. I just felt like I had lost control of the
whole thing to the point where it was like being on this
rocket and then suddenly realizing you arent even driving

because I rap with an American accent and Im not

American? Well, thats valid on some level because thats
your opinion and I cant change that. But Im not trying to
sound blackI just grew up in a country where on TV and
in music and film, everyone was American or any Australian
person in them put on an American accent. So I never saw
it as strange at all. And I think its hard for Americans to
understand this because, when you look at the entertainment industry, American culture is the dominating culture
across the globe. A lot of people say Imagine if someone
rapped with a fake Australian accent. Well, okay, but you
dont turn on the TV and hear American people with fake
Australian accents, so I dont think its a fair comparison. I
grew up watching Nicole Kidman speaking with an
American accent in every movie. Even Keith Urban sings
with an American country accent. And thats just what you
have to do to make it in this industry and be accepted. Its
what I heard and its what I saw, so how can you not understand that that would be influential for me?
But you understand why some people in the hip-hop community might find it problematic? Of course. Its black

I DONT THINK I REALIZED HOW PREVALENT RACISM

it anymore. It was really scary. I even think back to the
Papa Johns incident and ask myself Why did that piss
you off so much? I see now that it spiralled into
something so quickly because I felt like I didnt have any
power over my own life. At that point, I needed to take
some time, step away and just get that control back.
Okay, so lets really look at 2015. You grew up loving hip
hop and rap, and you now get to participate in this community Kind of...it depends on who you talk to.
Well, you get to express yourself through rap. But for the
majority of 2015, your relationship with the hip-hop community was incredibly fraughthow do you feel about this?

culture and black music, so it becomes a racial conversationversus Keith Urban, who is making country music,
which is considered white. It becomes a very muddy area.
And it became especially difficult in 2015. The United
States has such a fraught history with race, and I dont
think I realized how prevalent racism still is and how hurt
people still are until I moved here and saw it for myself.
As I was growing up in Australia, it was easy to think
Well, that was then and obviously its not like that now.
Its not something you can understand when youre on the
other side of the world. But many people think I still live
in that bubble and that I dont understand that the United
States is set up in a way that doesnt benefit minorities. Ive
lived here for 10 years now, and I dont want it to be that
way either. Im marrying a black man, and my children
will be half blackof course I care about these things.
And I understand if youre not comfortable that I rap with
an American accent, and you are totally entitled to your
own opinions, but you dont have to listen to my music.
Im still going to keep making music.

So many people think that I dont care about rap music

and the community, but I absolutely care about it, to the
core of my being. Thats why the Q-Tip incident annoyed
me so much: Why do you think I need a history lesson?
Because surely if I did know anything about hip hop, I
wouldnt mix pop and rap together? Or I wouldnt rap in
an American accent if I truly understood? I just have a
different perspective about rap music. I love learning
about hip hop, I love reading about it and I actually love
having debates with other people about it.

Are you looking for acceptance from the hip-hop community? Certain people who dont like me think that I dont

have a tough time finding something in common with me.
At least white [and black] male rappers both have dicks
and theyre American. But for me, Im a white woman
from Australia. I get it, but I think we have a lot more in
common than they think.
If you could redo anything from 2015, would you? Umm,
yeah...of course. If I could, I would Men in Black
memory-erase 2015, I totally wouldthat would be
amazing! Oh, God, there are so many things. I think the
Azealia Banks thing is what really started it all. We dont
like each other on a personal level, and that has gone on
for many yearsbefore the Black Lives Matter incident
happened. So when I dismissed her, people started to
think that I dismissed the whole movement, but I wasnt
trying to dismiss Black Lives MatterI was trying to
dismiss her because its our personal shit. I dont think the
subject matter of her tweet was invalid; I just think it was
emotionally charged and driven by something else, and
the whole thing got so misconstrued. I just wish I had
acknowledged the issue head-on because it made people
think I dont care about whats going on socially and

it. Its just part of life. You can do without it; I did without
it for a couple of months and it was great. I was able to
record my second album without any distractions, which
really allowed me to enjoy the whole process again. Now
Im definitely back and talking to fans, but there are some
things I dont do anymore.
Like what? I dont look at the comments anymore. Well,
I say that, but Im only human. I love talking to fans, but
then you end up in some random comment section and
accidentally find things that can really affect youwhether you realize it or not at the time. Its tough.
At what point did you realize you were ready to go back
online? I felt like not being on social media, in a way, was

letting those other people win. And before, I felt like Okay,
so what if they win? I need my sanity, and if that is what
it takes to have my sanity back, then they can win. But then
I realized that there are people out there who do support
me and want to interact with me online, and I shouldnt let
other people take that away from me and my fans.
What did you learn about yourself through all of this? I
think the biggest lesson I learned is that people are going

OH, GOD, THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS I WOULD

REDO. IF I COULD, I WOULD MEN IN BLACK MEMORY-ERASE
2015, I TOTALLY WOULD. THAT WOULD BE AMAZING!
whats happening in America, and I do care. Even though
I still hate Azealia Banks, I wish I had said it in a way
that didnt make people think I was oblivious to the
movement. And I wish I hadnt gotten into a fight with
Papa Johns!
So will you be talking about these types of social issues
moving forward? I think its important for music to re-

flect what is going on socially and for there to be those

kinds of voices within the industry. But I want to be that
person you can listen to for four minutes and not think
about that stuff at all, and its important to have that
too.... Im not going to suddenly start rapping about
political matters; its just not what I do. There are other
great people who do that, like Kendrick Lamar and
J. Cole. Im not here to offer that commentary, but that
doesnt mean I dont care. I dont think everyone has to
be everythinglike, does Katy Perry have to start making
songs about politics? I think its good to still be able to
have a little fun.
Social media is such a double-edged sword. On the one
hand, it gives you a voice, which feels amazing when you
first start out as an artist, but... But then you say stupid

things! I know a lot of people in my position who dont

go on the Internet, but I was born in 1990. I grew up with

68

to say what theyre going to say. And its really hard not
to get emotional or become overly sensitive about other
peoples opinions, especially if you feel like theyre wrong.
But I think I spent a lot of energy last year trying to explain my side of the story because I thought If you could
just understand my side, surely youd agree with me. But
some people arent ever going to agree with youand
thats just life.
That pretty much sums up your year in 2015. Yes, but in a
weird way Im glad for it all. Because of what happened,
there were a lot of friendships that I ended up rekindling
and people I started working with again. It made me reflect
and change things that I may not have even considered
changing before. So, Im really glad that it all happened.
One of those friendships is with your old producers,
D.R.U.G.S., who produced your mixtape Ignorant Art in
2011. Ive known these guys since 2010; they were my

first friends when I moved to L.A. When I arrived there,

a lot of producers didnt understand my angle, but
D.R.U.G.S. totally got it and we ended up making my
mixtape. I didnt even ask my label for a budget for this
albumI just went to their house every day and we
would just write stuff. I dont want to record with anyone
else, ever. h

ON PLASTIC SURGERY
I think, in 2016, people should
be more accepting of the fact
that both famous and non-famous
women are having cosmetic procedures. Thats just the reality. And
I think more people need to admit
that shit so it doesnt have to be
so taboobecause were all doing
it anyway.
I wanted to change my nose
because I didnt grow up with a
bump on itthat happened when I
got smashed in the face with a soccer ball when I was 16. Now I feel
like my nose looks the way its supposed to look. But for how long do
we have to acknowledge that I got
a nose job? For the rest of my life?
Am I going to be 45 and people are
still saying Nice nose job?
Everyone tells you that you
should love your body the way it
is, but then it is bad to say that you
want to change something about
yourself not because you want to
look like someone else, just because you want to? Whats wrong
with that?
Theres nothing black and white
about beauty or plastic surgery.
There are no guarantees that it
will fix how you feel about yourself.
All of those women [who criticize
someone for having surgery]if
they had $10 million in their account tomorrow, Id dare them
not to change one thing about
themselves or at least think about
it. Yes, there are some women who
wouldnt change a thing, but, for
the majority of us, wed be thinking
about that one thing. And theres
nothing wrong with that. I just
hope that in 25 years the conversation will shift to where if a woman
wants to change her body, all we
say is Good for her! instead of
shaming her for making decisions
about her own body.

CELEBRITY
Tell me about your new album, Digital Distortion. I

wouldnt say its an angry album. Its still uptempo and

fun, but its a little more grown-up and moody. I didnt
want peoples commentary to take me away from the style
of music that I make.... There are some Fuck yous and
Fuck yeahs, but I want people to hear it and feel good.
Does the title reflect some of the distortions you experienced that year? The album has a bit of an electronic,

digital influence, so the name fits sonically. But then, of

course, topically, we all know the different things that
were said about me in 2015some of them were fair and
some of them, I think, were unfair. I just think its interesting that we live in this age of digital distortion where
were all distorting each other and distorting ourselves
and our perception of who we all are, and none of it is
really accurate anymore.
Would you say that your persona of Iggy Azalea is a type of
distortion? Not at all. Its not like my alter ego or any-

thing. Its me. Im not some quiet person or a complete

introvert until I get onstage. Of course there are pieces of
me you wont see, but most of what you see in my music

young or I didnt get the context. But I knew that it made

me feel good.
When did you realize you could be more than just a fan of
rap music, that you could be a rapper? I dont really know

why I thought it was possible since a lot of people kept

telling me it was a shitty idea. And I dont think I really
thought I could be more than just a fan or that people
would even like my music. But I loved rap and had so
much fun making music that I just kept doing it.
When you moved to Houston and Atlantaand you met
Southern rappers whom youd admired your whole life
were you surprised that they wanted to mentor you? When

I arrived, everyone was so welcoming and cool. I dont

think any of them thought I was a jokeI think they
thought it was cool that I was so interested in learning
how to rap so they let me come along for the ride.
Youve said in the past that it was during this time in your
life that you really learned how to rap. What do you say to
people who dont agree with this idea that you can learn
how to rap? Thats like saying you cant learn how to

dance. I do think Ive always known how to fit into a

I JUST BECAME THIS THING THAT EVERYONE

LAUGHED AT AND WOULD WRITE AWFUL THINGS
ABOUTI THINK PEOPLE FORGOT I WAS A PERSON.
is present in my life. Maybe I am a bit more polite in real
life versus online. I definitely dont say Fuck you all the
time! It takes a lot to make me pissed off in real life.
So you never actually set out to build a persona? I started
calling myself Iggy Azalea in 2010; it was around the time
I started making stop-motion animated videos with my
freestyle rap because I felt like I had found my sound. But
I was never like, Let me create Iggy! And in 2010, I was
only 20I was just a kid! I think its rare to find anyone
who has their identity locked down at that age.
Do you remember when and why you fell in love with rap
music? I was probably 13 or 14 years old. It fit with my

teen angst at the time. I was totally obsessed with Tupac,

but I also remember listening to Missy Elliott and
OutKast. To be honest, sometimes I didnt really know
what anyone was talking about because Im not from
where they were from. But you didnt have to understand
every word to love a song. I was in China recently and
our tour guide said that he loves rap music. When I
asked him why, he said: I just like the way it feels to say
the words. Even though I dont know what the words
might mean, I like the way it feels to say them. And I can
totally understand that. As a kid in Australia, I didnt
understand a lot of rap music either because I was too

pocket of a beat, and I love writing music. So I agree, you

cant teach thatbut you still have to be a student. And if
youre not willing to be a student, then youre not going
to be great at anythingwhatever your passion is. You
have to learn things from people who know more than
your minuscule knowledge as a beginner.
What kinds of stories do you want people to be talking
about this year when they hear your name? I feel like I got

villainized so badly last year, to the point where I wasnt

even a person anymore. I just became this thing that everyone laughed at and would write awful things aboutI
think people forgot I was a person. People dont have to
like me, but I would appreciate it if they would still consider the fact that Im a human being. You think Nick likes
to hear that his fiance doesnt care about Black Lives
Matter? Trust me, it was not fun last year in this house.
No one wants to be told that they should kill themselves
and that theyre like Hitler a hundred times a day; its not
nice. At that point it goes beyond criticism, and, trust me,
I can handle criticism; if I couldnt, I wouldnt be here with
a second album, still standing. I think after what I went
through, most people would quit, and I definitely considered it, but I really love rap music and Im not going to
stop making it.

WE ASKED
A PSYCHIC
ANSWERED
Real talk: Most of us visit psychics to find
out exactly when that tall, dark and handsome fantasy is going to show upor to
see if its time to break up with our short,
fair and okay-looking reality. So thats why
(grain of salt firmly in hand) we asked medium Psychic Cyndi (who can often be found
giving readings at Torontos Four Seasons
Hotel Spa) exactly how helpful a glimpse
into the future can be for our love lives.

DEAR
FUTURE SOMEONE
Whatever, digital age: A 2015 survey of 18- to 34-year-olds conducted by
Google Consumer Surveys revealed that
the majority (39 percent) met their current
squeeze through mutual friends, while
a further 22 percent met in a social
settingi.e., IRL. Only 9 percent
of respondents met via online

LOOKING AHEAD

THE FUTURE IS NOW

How to tell if your love will stand the test of time.

If someone comes with a very specific question (such as Will I get married
in 2016?), can you actually answer? I can
usually give them a guided answer. For example, if I dont see a relationship happening for
them, I will tell them that, unfortunately, I cannot
see anything for them. I can only give them the
answers I am being shown by my guides.

THATS HOW MANY COMMITMENT PATTERNS THERE

ARE THAT DETERMINE WHETHER A COUPLE WILL MARRY.
A study by the University of Illinois identified these types of relationshipsdramatic, partner
focused, socially involved, conflict riddenand found that dating couples who are partner
focused (where they value each other above anything else) are most likely to marry. No prizes
for guessing that dramatic couples are least likely to make it down the aisle.

PREDICTED
Three tracks couples wont be first-dancing to in 2016.

Are there any unexpected relationship

benefits for people when they come to see
you? What I see is based on the energy presented to me at the time of the reading. I may
see that there is no marriage in the future, but
they still have free will to do what they want. For
one client, I saw no wedding in his future with
his existing girlfriend; he went ahead and got
married that summer, and I heard six months
later that he was getting a divorce.

What has being a psychic/medium

taught you about relationships? Pay attention to your own intuition. If something feels
wrong, then there is probably something wrong.
If you have to ask me whether I think the relationship is the right one for you, I believe
you already know the answer.

How can getting a reading benefit

people in non-romantic relationships? I can
give them insight into relationships with friends
or colleagues. For example, I can see a promotion or new job on the horizon and who will
assist them with getting that new position. I
often give them a time frame in which they can
expect good things and warn them if there are
things they should be cautious about.

Can lifelogging for 30 days change your life? BY CHRISTINA GONZALES

For the past 30 days, I have been lifelogginga type of non-stop personal-data
collection that has become associated with
what ex-Wired editors Gary Wolf and Kevin

when Wolf and Kelly recognized that the mass
adoption of mobile devices, along with datastorage enhancements and improvements in
biometric-sensor tools, was creating the perfect
storm for people to start tracking and analyzing
their everyday lives. Today, QS has ballooned
into an international movement led by Wolf h

Some 10 years into the QS movement,
theres an app for just about anything youd
want to track: Apples Health (found on iOS
9) is equipped to collect data on everything
from your patterns of sexual activity to your
body temperature; Start, an app that helps
you determine how well your prescription
antidepressants are working, encourages you
to log your moods; Checky gives you stats on
how often you peek at your phone; and
Chronos tells you where your hours go (in
transit, working overtime, being spontaneous). This year, the latest wearables include
smart jewellery, like Bellabeat Leaf, which
can be worn either as a necklace or a brooch
and tracks stress levels as well as menstrual
and ovulation cycles; hearables, which are
earbuds that monitor your heart rate; headbands that measure your brainwaves; smart
clothing that helps prevent injuries by determining if youre putting too much pressure
on certain body parts; and invisibles, a.k.a.
biometric tattoos.
If the QS industry seems health focused,
its because physical activity and processes
are the easiest to quantify. The global wearables market is expected to reach a value of
$26 billion by 2018, with the Fitbit being
hailed as king. But why track at all? What can
we really learn from knowing every minute
detail of our existence? Even Wolf asked in
his 2010 TED Talk (through which many first
learned about QS): What is the Quantified
Self for? What should it be for? While it
has primarily been used for product market
research and development and biometric
security (like Apples Touch ID system), Wolf
argues that the quest for self-knowledge is
whats truly driving this industry.
Eric Boyd, Toronto-based creator of

core of the Quantified Self movement has

always been people who are trying to figure
out something about their lives and use
tracking in order to accomplish that.
What the Quantified Self does is
make what you do more explicit, says
Alan Majer, another co-organizer of the
Quantified Self Meetup group in Toronto
and the founder of Good Robot, a custom
IT firm. Whether its habitual or a pattern, you have a greater awareness overall.
Its really valuable to have that kind of selfawareness because well-being is centred on
this belief of self-efficacythat, actually,
what you do makes a difference. QS is those
dotted linesthe connection between your
behaviours and your outcomes.
Critics of the QS movement, like
Elizabeth Lopatto, a 32-year-old science
editor for online magazine The Verge, are
dubious. To me, the most troubling aspect
of the Quantified Self is that theres the tendency to judge the numbers as if theyre the
most important thingand theyre not.
The ancient Greek maxim Know thyself
wasnt about Socrates counting his steps, she
quips. In terms of self-knowledge, its fine
to know that you want to walk five miles a
day, but that doesnt strike me as having the
same kind of significance as understanding
that you have a certain behavioural pattern
that you repeat in relationships.
However, Toronto-based Sacha Chua, a
32-year-old consultant, programmer and
blogger, thinks that self-tracking is far from
troubling. In fact, for her, it has been downright life changing. During her graduate studies at the University of Toronto, Chua was
fastidious about tracking her finances. Frugal
by nature, she began carefully tracking her
cash expenses and transactions. This gave her
the tools to optimize her savings, and at 28
she quit her job as a consultant for IBM and
began a five-year journey in semi-retirement.
Its possible to enjoy collecting data and
asking questions, and you can approach all
this with self-kindness, says Chua, who now
tracks everythingfrom the time she spends
on everyday activities and the clothes she
wears to old memories and where she leaves
different items around the houseon her

Based on her blog, and getting to know

Chua myself, it seems to me that her ongoing datafication is driven primarily by
the pursuit of a life with purposeand wonder (an intention QS critics would argue isnt
possible with just numbers alone).
Im not trying to wring out every last
second of efficiency here, explains Chua.
Im just testing: This is pretty good, but I
wonder what better would look like. I wonder what little thing would help me understand and appreciate more. How do I play
with this in order to explore the possibilities? And when you do that, I think you
engage with life a little bit more.
The funny thing is, though Chua engages
in what many would consider a rigorous
form of data collection, she doesnt actually
own any wearable self-tracking devices. The
kinds of questions shes interested in answering require self-constructed models she
builds on her own, starting with handdrawn index cards. These models eventually
become digitized thanks to her programming savvy. For casual adopters like me, on
the other hand, wearable technology and
apps are the best place to start.
Like Chua, I delved into the QS movement out of sheer curiosity. I wanted my
Fitbit to answer questions like: What kind of
workouts garner the most intensity? How
active am I during the day? Do I eat enough
food on weekdays when Im busy working?
And, like many people jumping onto the
wearable bandwagon, I had one primary fitness goal: to increase lean muscle mass.
But my Fitbit didnt understand that I
wanted to gain weight, not lose it. After all,
the first metric you see when you open the
app is calories burned, which, in my case,
was irrelevant. Its a technology that seems
born out of the eternally dieting woman
the tools associated with weight watching
are certainly all there.
You can argue that anorexics were, in
fact, onto the Quantified Self movement
before it existed as they are very rigorous
about tracking calories in and out, says
Lopatto. For people who are in recovery
from eating disorders, have active eating
disorders or are susceptible to them, these

obsessing easier.
Sociologists have been studying the effects of self-tracking technology on society,
and while the overall consensus is that wearables may help to make people healthier,
issues like extreme calorie counting are only
part of the problem. With the extraction of
health data en masse, superior health isnt
just measured against oneself; its measured
against a collective.
Christopher Till, Ph.D., a researcher at
Leeds Beckett University in Leeds, England,
studies the intersection of health, gender and
tech. He argues that wearable self-tracking
devices appeal to people in part because they
can be ranked against each other. Were
always being compared, he says. To me,
thats one of the fundamental things that
these [technologies] do. They kind of objectify your exercise behaviour to something
standardized. With impossible standards of
beauty, health and fitness already in place,
wearables only seem to amplify this idea that
theres always a bigger, better goal to be
reached and that theres always someone else
you need to beat.
I think women in particular, historically
and maybe today as much as ever, are encouraged to compare themselves with other
women in terms of their achievements, says
Till. Men are too, but not, I think, to the
extent that women are. This idea of the
woman who has it allwho is successful at
work and in her home life, looks glamorous
all the time, exercises all the time and eats
extremely healthilyseems to fit into the
narrative that is often presented through
these [wearables] of being able to achieve all
your goals: the idea that its not just about
helping you exercise more; its about managing this busy life.
Two weeks into lifelogging, I ran into a
friend who also wears a Fitbit; she suggested
that we add each other as friends on the app.
I can tolerate this type of friend-to-friend information sharing with someone I know, but
daily reminders to link my exercise stats with
my social accounts always felt off. Though

already recognize my face and personality via my Facebook, Instagram,
Twitter and Snapchat accountsbut
now it could potentially have access
to the way my body works too?
One of the foremost researchers in the QS movement is Deborah
Lupton, a sociologist at the University
of Canberra, in Australia. I suggest to
her that Millennials, who are naturally inclined to share details about their
lives online, dont seem too apprehensive about giving away biometric data
to corporations and the cloud, but
she believes otherwise.
Two and a half years ago, we
had the Edward Snowden revelations, and since then, weve had all
sorts of scandals: the Facebook
national-mood-manipulation-experiment scandal, the Ashley Madison
scandal, the celebrity-nude-photos
hacking on iCloud, says Lupton.
These got a huge amount of media
attention. So what my research is
showing is that peopleregardless
of their ageare slowly becoming
aware of how their data can be accessed by others. But its a gradual
process because people are only starting to use [these technologies] and
think about their implications.
I see stuff on Facebook all the
time, like peoples running routes,
and Im like, Oh, my God, dont
share where youre running at night
by yourself! cries Jennifer Thomson,
a 30-year-old Nike+ Training Club
(NTC) trainer from Toronto, who
began self-tracking using a Polar
heart-rate monitor during her undergraduate studies in physical education. Thomsons fitness tracking has
since evolved (she even uses an app
called Bloom to remind her to drink
water) as she works toward her first
Olympic weightlifting competition.
Yet the one thing that all of
Thomsons self-tracking wearables

when she doesnt hit her weightlifting
targets is that she is only human:
Thats where using a spreadsheet
comes in handy, she explains. I
keep a notes column, and it might be
something like Only got four hours
of sleep, so I know why I was having
a bad daythat human aspect always has to be there.
As part of Luptons research
on self-tracking, she asks subjects
What cant the device tell you?
And one man said, You know, it
cant tell me whether I had a fight
with my wife or whether Im just
in a bad mood, recalls Lupton.
We wouldnt want to reach a point
where the only knowledge about
ourselves that we consider valuable
is the kind of knowledge we get from
digital data because its incredibly
reductive. It leaves out a lot of elements of our lives that cant be measured by digital devices.
When I look back at my 30 days
of lifelogging, Im somewhat surprised to realize that the regular buzz
from my Fitbit Surgetelling me,
say, that Id hit my step goal or that
Id gained a few poundswasnt as
satisfying as I thought it would be.
To be honest, it started to feel more
like a shackle than a knowledgeable
best friend, slowly turning into a
warden of my day-to-day life (the
nagging coach when I was exercising
or the giver of useless biometric stats
when I was bored at work).
Instead, what truly gave me joy
was remembering how many times
I laughed, how many words were
spoken or how many times I ran into
someone I knew. Im aware that these
tidbits of my life can be turned into
chunks of data to be analyzed and
optimized, but Id rather they not
be. My self-knowledge tells me that
these things make me better, whether
theyre quantified or not.

And, more importantly, who pays?
Just like that, my new husband and I are right in line
with the 41 percent of young Canadian couples who, in
2013, told accounting firm MNP that financial stress affects their relationship. The same year, a BMO survey
found that while 98 percent of married couples know
its important to be on the same financial page, less than
half of engaged couples discuss how they plan to handle
money once theyre married. (We were in the smarter half,
albeit just barely, splitting expenses down the middle with
a loose if-it-aint-broke strategy for the future. Whether its
fair, however, has been an ongoing debate.)

back this season, with brands like
Louis Vuitton, Loewe, Chanel,
Maison Margiela and Edun sticking an experimental toe in the waters of what may
come. The hallmarks of the trend are not
subtle: Prada embarked on a space odyssey,
with orbital earrings dangling off the models
and woven mesh layered over traditional
houndstooth jackets, while Thomas Tait gave
the 60s-era designs he sent down the runway
a Jetsons jolt, with crystal-ball embroidery
and occult-looking portholes. Tait embraced
the extraterrestrial inspiration, explaining that
the embroidered circles with 3-D outer rings
looked quite sharp and mechanical, while
the artwork suspended inside the circles [on
the sheer backing] appeared to float in air
like a cosmic screenshot of a constellation.

Space-age details on the catwalk have become synonymous with the futuristic trend
today, but the details themselves havent
changed all that much since the 60s, despite
the fact that our grasp of the concept of the
future itself should be leaps and bounds
ahead. Or should it? If the futuristic trend in
fashion is so easy to recognize, can it really be
considered clairvoyant?
To start, the ubiquitous overlay of braided
and knotted mesh and lattice that is a galactic
leitmotif of the collections is actually a 21stcentury update of the chain-mail minidresses
Paco Rabanne constructed with a pair of
pliers in the years before the 1969 moon
landing. Rabanne, along with Pierre Cardin
and Andr Courrges, pioneered futuristic
fashion in the 60s. But, unlike his contemporaries, Rabanne took no issue with the h

True to Rabannes word, there is a great

futurism. And the time travel were witnessing on the catwalk today is still spinning us
backwards. At Maison Margiela, for instance,
there was silver eye makeup and matching

had a broad 50s cut to them, and the geisha

Louis Vuitton, despite the staging (the show

Gigli-like trousers were inspirations from a
quarter of a century ago. The evidence that
the past is always forwarded into the future
is in the details, except this time around, the
future is a mere accessory. It is a bit player in
a costume drama: a couple of dots under the

Futurism was born in Italy in 1909
with the publication of Filippo Tommaso
Marinettis Futurist Manifesto and emphasized a total break with the past as a means
to an end: modernity. The movement evolved
after it emerged, finding a perfect fit with
Fascism and Mussoliniits more violent

directly or indirectly, designers like Rabanne,
Cardin and Courrges, who set the template
for futurism in fashion. Courrges, for one, is
credited with inventing the miniskirt (he shares
the honour with Mary Quant) and pioneered

and architectural cut-outs. At
Cardin, hemlines were sometimes as oval as an egg, while
fabrics were PVC, plastic,

they kept sharp shapes best.

world of tomorrow. Futurist fashion predicted wonderful times ahead.
The tropes we now recognize in fashion
as futuristic are a product of that hopeful
vision of the future, which futurism enabled.
Looking at the work of Pierre Cardin during the mid- and late 1960s, I love the clean
lines and the bold silhouettes and the dazzling
colour, says Frances McSherry, fashion historian at Bostons Northeastern University.
When I look at what the designers are coming up with in 2016, I dont have the same
visceral feeling. Its not clean and refreshing;
its clunky and bulky. I wonder if it really is a
trendalthough people are acting like its a
trendor if its a passing fad and well look
back in a decade and see that it was just an
idea that some designers were grasping at
calling their collections futurism just for the
sake of being able to give it a name.
Perhaps futurism today resides not in
season-to-season trend makers but in designers who are committed to the idea of creating pieces that are ahead of their time and
who constantly rethink the functionality of
clothing, its decorativeness, what its made of
and how its made. What once seemed gimmicky, like Pauline van Dongens solar-celled
dresses, now seems practical: On a sunny day,
a garment that keeps your phone powered
up is convenient. Her experimentation with
3-D-printed clothing and shoes, called between, builds up customized clothes with
puff ink using computer software that maps
the bodys shape to create a pattern with the

2008, two years out of school, she produced
a couture collection called Chemical Crows
that was made up of woven hair, leather and
brass pins, working in much the same way as
Rabanne did. Its all handmade, without computers, she said back then. In all the brass
pins, there are several little holes and one hinge.
I sew metal threads by hand through the holes,
which I finish after with leather. I do not even
draw anything [...] but the designs strongly
exist in my head.
The designs knocking around in van
Herpens head have altered little over the intervening years. What has changed is that technology has caught up with them. She now 3-D
prints, weaves, laser cuts and laser sinters her
ready-to-wear clothes using organic materials and different kinds of lace, some crystal
studded. Even bioengineering is an inspiration,
leading her to new ways of thinking about
garments, including growing dresses that
mimic the way spiders build a circular web or
using magnets to shape iron-filing-embeddedresin fabric into clothing.
Futurism today begins with envisioning the way things can be but using old
techniques to achieve that vision as best
we can. Then, the technology catches up,
revolutionizes the process and frees our
thoughts to leap ahead to the next big idea.
I like to find things I dont understand,
says Tait. Its only when we dont understand and want to discover that we find
new things and progress into the future. Its
a very optimistic way of living, which is
crucial for creative and personal growth.
This push and pull between technology and ideas makes futurism a different,
more rigorous kind of trend than, say, oldschool tennis, Mad Max or 20s colonial
Britain in the Middle East. You cant just
slap silver tinsel onto a dress and call it
futuristic. It demands that something
truly new be brought to the table
something that boldly goes where no
woman has gone before.

REDOLENT ROAD Each of the 10 scents in designer Derek Lams fragrance debut was inspired
by scenes on the cobblestoned street outside his former SoHo studio in New York. I wanted them to feel very
true to what I had experienced, he explains. Silent St., composed of white musks, captures his impression of the
city under a blanket of snow. Looking Glass, with notes of Chinese magnolia and tonka bean, is an appreciation of
a womans confidence when she looks at herself before a meeting or a date. Theres always an expectation that
[a] designer will eventually do a signature fragrance, says Lam, whose collection was two years in the making.

Heres why you should make shadow sticks a significant part of your
beauty arsenal: Theyve got the easy application of a lip balm (applied
half-heartedly, it still looks good) and are built like crayons for your face. If
drawing isnt your forte, dont worry: This is the makeup equivalent of paint

exactly where you want it toand stays until you want it gone.

light to the face. Or make like celebrity makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury,
who lines eyes and then smudges and softens shadow with a brush for an
easy Kate Moss smoky look. Bonus: Unlike traditional powder eyeshadows,
shadow sticks are more likely to stay put. Shadow sticks normally have very
little fallout, says Rivas. This holds true for creasing as well.

HEIR SPRAY
Pradas latest scent leaves
plenty to the reimagination.
efore brands launch a fragrance, they tend to
test it against other scents on the market. You
would think they want to launch something
unique, but typically they want assurances that
their scent is similar, explains Emmanuelle Moeglin,
global fragrance and colour cosmetics analyst at marketresearch firm Mintel. They want the fragrance to be
noticed, but they dont want it to be considered too disruptive, she says. Its a Catch-22. Prada, however, prides
itself on being anything but the status quo. Prada is not
as driven by consumer testing, says Daniela Andrier of
Prada Parfums. Theres something free-spirited in its approach. It really goes for different things and has more of
an identity. Andrier is the award-winning nose responsible for many of Pradas scent supernovas, including Prada
Candy and the new launch of a range of six perfumes
called Les Infusions de Prada.
Prada first introduced the infusion concept back in
2007, when it released Infusion dIrisa sparkling floral
citrus that debuted as a captivating limited edition and
instantly became iconic. Joining its return is an unusual
and compelling group of fragrances, including Fleur
dOrange (orange blossom), Oeillet (carnation) and
Amande (almond). Each imparts a gauzy, gossamer-light
air to its wearer. You have an impression of the ingredient, but youre not overwhelmingly fragranced, says
Andrier. Theres something very subtle yet very present;
you can still smell the skin of the person wearing it.
The future of modern fragrance may include a move
toward niche perfumery, which hearkens back to the
root of perfumery and focuses on high-quality raw
materials. This collection certainly feels like an exclusive
fantasy of nonconformist notes and narratives. One of
the beautiful things about working for a house of invention and creativity like Prada is that it has such respect
and value for the story, says Andrier. Its something
people forget when making a fragrance: to tell another
story that isnt always the same.

Les Infusions de Prada Eau de Parfum Spray in Amande, Iris, Oeillet, Fleur
dOrange, Iris Cdre and Vtiver ($175 for each 100 mL bottle). For details,

Hayworth is my favourite redhead, Lauren
Bacall is my favourite brunette and Marilyn
Monroe is my favourite blonde. I thought of
the three of them as I was making these lipsticks because theyre all different in personality, so the lipsticks have different attitudes.
I always like to say Dress from the feet
up. Old Hollywood was an era of rich accessories: Women wouldnt leave the house

Skincare innovations now come via sophisticated delivery systems and tweaks to gold-standard ingredients. In
Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic + Retinol Wrinkle Recovery Peel ($110), retinol meets ferulic acid, a plant-based antioxidant that boosts collagen
and cell turnover without causing redness. NeoStrata All-in-One Night Serum ($86) encapsulates retinol to allow for a faster penetration into
the deeper layers of the epidermis, says research chemist Nick Dat Ngo. It doesnt leave a [potentially irritating] accumulation of retinol on the
surface. Hyaluronic acid can visibly plump skinbut with a caveat. Delivery systems are so advanced today, says Brandon Truaxe, founder of
Deciem, a company that owns several brands, including Hylamide. Companies can make the particle sizes small enough to penetrate skin; the
challenge is how to stop them at a certain level [to deliver benefits to the right places]. Cue Hylamide Booster Low-Molecular HA ($20), which
has five different hyaluronic complexes to target varying skin depths. Rodan + Fields Redefine Acute Care Skincare for Expression Lines ($253
for 10 pairs of strips) pours hyaluronic acid into hundreds of wrinkle-smoothing microscopic liquid cones. In Philosophy The Microdelivery
Overnight Anti-Aging Peel ($89), exfoliating glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids are tempered with an echinacea-infused night cream, while
the brightening vitamin C in Neutrogena Triple Age Repair ($37) reduces the look of hyperpigmentation. For details, see Shopping Guide.

Buying foundation is the beauty equivalent of buying jeans: Its hard to find something that fits, and the idea of
trying them all on is exhausting. But with these latest formulas, its easy to find the perfect match. My mother always said that sun is beauty

Le Teint ($64) bottles the glow of the brands highlighter as well as its Anti-Fatigue Complex to keep your skin looking alive, even when

EDITORS POV From Burmas Forbidden Islands to Hokkaido, Japan, newly accessible and newly trendy places are always high
on lists of where to go next. But another travel categorysee it before its goneis gaining momentum. The sights in this category are
threatened by everything from urbanization to global warming and might not be around to explore forever. The polar bears around Churchill,

reality of seeing them is already bittersweet. Now or never is one kind of travel I hope becomes a thing of the past. CHRISTINA REYNOLDS

ESCAPE

ICE BEARS,
BABY!
Bundle up for a polar-bear
safari in northern Manitoba.
BY CHRISTINA REYNOLDS

die Biddle was scanning for polarbear tracks out the window of
the slow-moving Tundra Buggy
when she saw something scamper through the
willow bushes. Stop! Whats that? she called
out to fellow visitors. Buggy driver Jim Baldwin
hit the brakes, and two dozen Frontiers North
Adventures guests, cameras in hand, scrambled
to the right side of the massive vehicle to try
to catch a glimpse of the creature. Where is
it? I see it! people cried out. But Biddles
eagle eye hadnt spotted a 1,000-pound bear; it
was a 10-centimetre-long furry rodent. Now
lets find the matching fox to go with it! wisecracked Baldwin.
Like Biddle, we had all come to the frozen
landscape around Churchill, Man., to see the
great white bears. But the unexpected shrieks
of our great lemming moment, as our group
instantly christened it, temporarily eclipsed
the bears. The tiny sighting even inspired a
hashtag: After much debate, consultation with
a guidebook and laughter, we concluded that
the creature was actually a vole (because of
its long tail), not a lemming. #itsnotalemming
was born (Google it!), and a disparate group
of visitors from as far away as Hong Kong and

Australia and as close as Airdrie, Alta., and

Toronto had officially bonded. What I think
prepared us for such over-the-top excitement
about something so seemingly insignificant
was that we were already giddy from seeing
a whole bunch of bears. According to careful tracking by Frank Paca, a savvy and spry
92-year-old from Alexandria, Va., who was,
by far, the oldest member of our group, we
saw 57 polar bears during our two and a half
days out on the chilly tundra (although his
total likely includes some duplicate sightings).
But by any count, it was an ice-bear extravaganzaour early-November timing had been
perfect. The nearby Hudson Bay was starting to
resemble the texture of a margarita, as our
guide, Hayley Shephard, put it, and was about
a week away from forming a stable layer of
ice. (As soon as the full freeze sets in, the bears
head out to voraciously hunt ringed sealstheir
access to this primary food source is cut off
when there is no ice.) So the usually solitary animals gather by this part of the seashore, one of
the first places the ice forms, until their hunting
grounds solidify. These are the conditions that
have secured Churchill fame as the polar-bear
capital of the world for a few weeks every fall. h

CHURCHILL BOUND With a population of just 813, this northern-Manitoba community is pretty sleepyeven during peak
polar-bear season in the fall. Must-sees include
the Eskimo Museum, a cabinet-of-curiositiesstyle time warp with 1930s-, 40s- and 60sera displays showcasing ancient artifacts that
tell the stories of the Dorset, Thule and Inuit
peoplesas well as the town post office, where
you can get a polar-bear stamp in your passport.

BABY, ITS COLD OUTSIDE Its pretty fun to watch polar bears hang
out. They dont just sit around with their bums to the wind and their
noses tucked under their massive paws (although they do look pretty
cute doing just that); they sparand I actually saw fur flying! Heres
how it went down: The Tundra Buggy, which looks kind of like a
giant Mars rover, pulls up to the bears. The buggy windows (safely set
a good three metres off the ground) go down. Puffy jackets are quickly
zipped up. Cameras are positioned. The play-by-play is in full swing.
Two young males are nose to nose. Their heavy exhalations hang in
the air as they suss each other out. Soon, theyre up on their hind legs,
jostling back and forth, kicking up snow. A platter-size paw lands a
whack across the face. Nice move, someone calls out as the rest of us
Ooh and Ah and the shutter-button clicking reaches a crescendo.
Now it looks like theyre doing the tangobut its hard to tell who has
the lead. Its a great bear hug! says Steven Amstrup, chief scientist at
Polar Bears International (PBI), who has joined our excursion.
A few minutes later, the bears are again nose to nose, but this time
they are curled up together in the snow preening and flossing fur
from their mouths. They need to cool down after working up such
a sweat, says Amstrup. This might seem like curious behaviour, but
the bears were not actually in a life-and-death battle. Sparring is their
way of getting to know each otherto figure out who is dominant,
he explains. That way, when they are out on the sea ice, they already
know if its worth engaging in a high-stakes fight for food or a mate.
After eyeballing matches for almost three hours one day, we thought
we had all the moves down. But the next day, a whole new kind of
combat emerged. Its like pillow fighting, said Shephard, as a
female pair literally nuzzled and kissed each other throughout their
sparring dance. It doesnt look like the boys club, she said with a
chuckle. That said, dont underestimate the femalesthey will fiercely
fight off larger males to protect their cubs.
A beautiful morning

(left); the aurora

Churchill (below)

LIGHT EM UP My last day out on the tundra began with a very early but very exciting wake-up call.
The northern lights are out! cheered Shephard as she ran through the bunkhouse around 5 a.m. I went
out on the deck and watched the swirling green bands flicker and fade and reappear in the dark, starspecked sky until the horizon ripened into vibrant tangerine and then softened into a fuchsia that made
the snowand the polar bearsglow pink. At other times, the bears had appeared icy white and creamy
yellow, so I was fascinated to learn that polar-bear fur actually has no pigment. Its the colour of ambient
lightit absorbs and reflects what is in the environmentand normal sunlight is white light, explained
Amstrup. We rushed out in our Tundra Buggy to try to capture shots of the bears in this perfect but
fleeting light. Im not sure I got good pictures, but it doesnt really matter, Sam Robbins, a 28-year-old
Australian whod made a solo voyage here to see the bears, told me. A decade ago, her mother, a teacher, had connected her classroom with this place through a PBI webcast featuring scientists who showed
off live shots of the bears. I always remembered that, and I wanted to see it first-hand, she said.

night at dusk, our Tundra Buggy

would dock with our spacestation-on-wheels lodge, which
was parked in prime bearviewing territory. After dinner,
Amstrup would tell us more
about the curious habits of the
bears. He explained how incredibly mobile bears can be. Radio
collars have revealed ranges of
600,000 square kilometres
larger than the Porcupine caribou herdsand how one female bear swam 687 kilometres
over a nine-day stretch, likely
searching for ice from which to
hunt. She lost 20 percent of
her body weight during that
swimand her yearling cub, he
explained. The bears would
much rather walk than go in the
water. Amstrup spent 30 years
studying polar bears in Alaska
before shifting his focus to conservation advocacy in 2010.
There is still research to do,
but we know so much already.
None of it matters if we dont
stop the rise in greenhouse-gas
emissions, which is causing a
rise in temperatures. If we dont,
were going to be polar-bear historians. Still, Amstrup doesnt
think the species is necessarily
doomed, and neither does Alysa
McCall, a 28-year-old staff scientist at PBI who has spent several seasons collaring and tracking the western Hudson Bay
bears. Im not sure how hopeful
I am for the Hudson Bay sea
ice, she said. Im worried for
these bears but hopeful for
bears as a whole.

teleportation, though, well still have to flysomething Huston
doesnt actually like to do. (He makes the most of his air time by
sleeping and working.) But for now, its the only way he can access
all the local experiences he craves. I like bizarre flavours and
tastes. Ive eaten ants in Nairobi, frogs in Vietnam and lots of
strange things in ChinaI really enjoy that about travel.

HOROSCOPE

150

(MARCH 21 APRIL 19)

(APRIL 20 MAY 20)

(MAY 21 JUNE 20)

This is not only your birthday month but

also the best time of year to buy wardrobe goodies because three planets in
your sign guarantee that you will like
what you see in the mirror. This is also a
great month to travel and expand your
world. Meanwhile, dont forget that this
is one of the best years for you to improve your job or get a better one.

Youre a sensuous, tactile, juicy peach.

Even though youre keeping a low profile this month, you feel hot and sexy,
which perfectly dovetails with chances
to party and vacation. Yes, romance has
never been better. The only downside
right now is disputes about shared
property and inheritances. Fortunately,
your love of creature comforts prevails.

You are popular in April! Expect to

schmooze with unusual, offbeat people
and talented artistic types. Entertain at
home because this is the best year for
you to improve or expand your home or
explore real-estate opportunities. A
word of caution: Mars is opposite your
sign this month, which can test your
patience with partners and friends.

(JUNE 21 JULY 22)

(JULY 23 AUG. 22)

(AUG. 23 SEPT. 22)

Lucky you! This month, the Sun casts a

flattering glow on you. Use this to your
advantage and ask for what you want.
Make your pitch! In fact, romance with
your boss or someone in authority is
likely. Meanwhile, others will want your
creative input on design and how
to improve things in general. You
are much in demand.

This month, you will spread your wings,

grab more of life and see the world.
Travel, if possible, because your appreciation of beauty is heightened; plus,
you can explore romantic opportunities
with people from other cultures. If you
cant blow town, be a tourist in your
own city. (This can be fun.) Your sex
drive is amped, and youre ready to play.

The stars bless you with lucky Jupiter in

your sign until September. Make the
most of this because it will not happen
again until 2027. This month, three planets benefit you through shared property
and other peoples wealth, including
loans and mortgages. Gifts, goodies
and favours will come your way. Physical
intimacy will be very affectionate.

(SEPT. 23 OCT. 22)

(OCT. 23 NOV. 21)

(NOV. 22 DEC. 21)

This is the only month when the Sun is

opposite your sign, which does two
things: It makes you focus on partnerships and friendships, allowing you to
work on how you relate to those who
are close to you, and it diminishes your
energy, which means you need more
sleep. At the same time, fiery Mars
energizes your communication skills.

This month, you want to earn more. You

know you can improve your job or get
a better one, and you can get better
working conditions. You can also strike
up an office romance. (This is why many
of you are shopping for sexy lingerie.)
Caution: Disputes about the ownership
of something might arise because you
identify with what you own right now.

Ooh la la! Its time for vacations and

romance. The planets promise fun,
pleasure and a delight in the arts. Grab
every chance to enjoy yourself. With
fiery Mars in your sign, you will burn the
candle at both ends. Meanwhile, you impress everyone because lucky Jupiter is
at the top of your chart until September.
It doesnt get any better than this.

(DEC. 22 JAN. 19)

(JAN. 20 FEB. 18)

(FEB. 19 MARCH 20)

You know you have to give up much of

what you have created since 2003.
Youre moving on. So use this month
to focus on family and real-estate
opportunities. Make your home more
attractive or check out new digs. Opportunities to travel and explore new
avenues in publishing, the media, medicine and the law continue to blossom.

Your daily pace is accelerated because

of a jam-packed schedule. Accept this
and go with the flow. Enjoy short trips
out of town. Relatives, siblings and
neighbours will demand face time. You
will also be inspired to write, read, act
and teach. Gasp! Competition with
a friend or a group is likely, but, hey,
this just revs your engines.

This is the perfect year to get married or

begin a new professional partnership.
Its also your time of harvest in a 30-year
cycle. This is why others are so impressed with your accomplishments
and why your ambition is stoked. Look
for ways to boost your earnings or get
a better job. Make it all work because
you are so running the show.
