History
Green Iowa AmeriCorps is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2009 after the
devastating floods of 2008. Its main purpose is to serve as an organization that assists the community
as it addresses proper energy efficiency issues. It is run through the University of Northern Iowas
center for Energy and Environmental education. It is an energy efficiency focused branch of the
larger organization AmeriCorps.
AmeriCorps was founded in 1993 by President William J. Clinton, with its sole purpose
being to help Americans who have critical needs in several aspects of life. Since the beginning of
Green Iowa in 2009, the organization has partnered with the Cedar Valley Community to provide
more energy efficient ways for people to live. This organization has members who are trained and
ready to help the community by working on houses to better insulate and lower heating costs. They
also work on programs that educate the community on how to become greener.
Iowa is known for having very harsh winters. Often the temperature can hover around 0
degrees. It is extremely important to have a home that is insulated, and warm enough, which is the
goal of Green Iowa to help families across the state with that. The members use donated materials,
and weatherize a house with the intention to lower heating costs, and to overall keep families
warmer, and safer.
Vision/Mission
Vision
Green Iowa AmeriCorps purpose is to serve as an organization that assists the Cedar Valley
community as it addresses proper energy efficiency issues.
Mission
Green Iowa AmeriCorps in Blackhawk county is a non-profit organization which aims to
implement energy efficiency services to under-served populations to reduce financial burden and
energy waste, promoting existing energy efficiency efforts in underserved Iowa communities,
providing energy conservation and efficiency education, identifying and addressing energy
efficiency use issues with a team-based approach in target communities, and recruiting and
managing volunteers.
Problem Statement
Since 2010, Green Iowa AmeriCorps the organization has weatherized over 625 houses,
offered more than 250 educational community programs and saved many Iowa families upwards
of $80,000 in energy and utility costs. All of this work, including labor and materials is done
through the donations from the public. Donations help promote energy efficiency across Iowa.
Donations enable our organization to continue to provide free energy audits and services for the
elderly, disabled, Veterans, LIHEAP recipients, and low-income households. Specifically this
December, Green Iowa AmeriCorps will have two donation giving trees within two building
supply stores so that customers may donate at the register. The continuation of these services helps
Iowan communities to build towards a "greener" future.
Targeted Publics
The typical demographics Green Iowa AmeriCorps is targeting are middle class shoppers
heading to stores like Menards/Home Depot in their middle 20s and older, some of which may
be bringing along children. Children are more likely to be interested in participating in these
giving trees than adults. Ideally, shoppers with the flexibility to purchase items that can improve
their homes or possibly donate to others.
Green Iowa AmeriCorps rely solely on donations to provide these services, unfortunately not all
their recipients qualify for free materials, but are always guaranteed the free labor. There is also a
shortage in donated supplies needed for weatherization purposes. They are in need of more
recognition and promotion of their philanthropic services which is possible through growth of
their educational outreach. This growth of educational outreach as well as the
The current state of the economy is a significant factor in external weaknesses. It affects not only
the recipients of the services but also Green Iowa AmeriCorps. When the economy is down,
consumers will be less willing to participate in donation drives or offer unpaid labor. Another
external weakness is how the weather impacts consumer behavior. Treacherous driving
conditions could decrease shopping traffic in home improvement stores which may lead to a
decrease in donated supplies. The weather can also affect travel to and from the homes and
families needing weatherization services.
Competitors
Green Iowa AmeriCorps has no competitors that offer the same weatherization services on a
consistent basis for free. However, they do compete with other deserving charities and nonprofits
for donations especially during the winter months. These local organizations include churches,
food banks, The Salvation Army, Toys for Tots, and Boys and Girls Club of America.
Client Limits
The limitations of Green Iowa AmeriCorps revolve around financial flexibility; this lack of flexibility
in financials leads to several problems. Not only is the organization unable to provide all necessary
materials and/or services for complete weatherization but they are also unable to reach assist all
families in need in the Cedar Valley. Lack of sufficient funding impedes their ability to further
educate and reach out to the community.

AmeriCorps. Throughout the years, VISTA has grown immensely and has over eight thousand
members who serve at one thousand one hundred projects nationwide, and continue to address
the root causes of poverty.
Founded in 2009 at the University of Northern Iowa Center for Energy and Environmental
Education, Green Iowa AmeriCorps main aim was to address conservation and sustainable uses
of energy resources in several Iowa communities, while they struggled to rebuild from the
devastating floods of 2008. These floods are what kick started the group in being community
partners to contribute to making homes more environmentally friendly. Community members
are trained specifically as energy auditors to complete this task.
AmeriCorps has partnered with multiple states and organizations nationwide to minimize
poverty rates and inform the public how to be environmentally friendly their daily life. The
purpose of the partnership is to match volunteers in different categories such as disaster relief,
high priority community needs, or to volunteer with United Way for additional opportunities.
AmeriCorps partners with schools and universities, such as University of Northern Iowa.
AmeriCorps and UNI have partnered together to form Green Iowa AmeriCorps. The mission
statement of Green Iowa AmeriCorps is, Helping make Iowans more energy efficient through
low-impact home weatherization, energy education, and community outreach. Innovation is one
of Green Iowa AmeriCorps top motivators, resulting in being listed as one of the most innovative
AmeriCorps programs in transforming communities through service.
