History
Green Iowa AmeriCorps is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2009 after the
devastating floods of 2008. Its main purpose is to serve as an organization that assists the community
as it addresses proper energy efficiency issues. It is run through the University of Northern Iowas
center for Energy and Environmental education. It is an energy efficiency focused branch of the
larger organization AmeriCorps.
AmeriCorps was founded in 1993 by President William J. Clinton, with its sole purpose
being to help Americans who have critical needs in several aspects of life. Since the beginning of
Green Iowa in 2009, the organization has partnered with the Cedar Valley Community to provide
more energy efficient ways for people to live. This organization has members who are trained and
ready to help the community by working on houses to better insulate and lower heating costs. They
also work on programs that educate the community on how to become greener.
Iowa is known for having very harsh winters. Often the temperature can hover around 0
degrees. It is extremely important to have a home that is insulated, and warm enough, which is the
goal of Green Iowa to help families across the state with that. The members use donated materials,
and weatherize a house with the intention to lower heating costs, and to overall keep families
warmer, and safer.

Green Iowa AmeriCorps 3 | P a g e

Vision/Mission
Vision
Green Iowa AmeriCorps purpose is to serve as an organization that assists the Cedar Valley
community as it addresses proper energy efficiency issues.

Mission
Green Iowa AmeriCorps in Blackhawk county is a non-profit organization which aims to
implement energy efficiency services to under-served populations to reduce financial burden and
energy waste, promoting existing energy efficiency efforts in underserved Iowa communities,
providing energy conservation and efficiency education, identifying and addressing energy
efficiency use issues with a team-based approach in target communities, and recruiting and
managing volunteers.

Green Iowa AmeriCorps 4 | P a g e

Problem Statement
Since 2010, Green Iowa AmeriCorps the organization has weatherized over 625 houses,
offered more than 250 educational community programs and saved many Iowa families upwards
of $80,000 in energy and utility costs. All of this work, including labor and materials is done
through the donations from the public. Donations help promote energy efficiency across Iowa.
Donations enable our organization to continue to provide free energy audits and services for the
elderly, disabled, Veterans, LIHEAP recipients, and low-income households. Specifically this
December, Green Iowa AmeriCorps will have two donation giving trees within two building
supply stores so that customers may donate at the register. The continuation of these services helps
Iowan communities to build towards a "greener" future.

Green Iowa AmeriCorps 5 | P a g e

Targeted Publics
The typical demographics Green Iowa AmeriCorps is targeting are middle class shoppers
heading to stores like Menards/Home Depot in their middle 20s and older, some of which may
be bringing along children. Children are more likely to be interested in participating in these
giving trees than adults. Ideally, shoppers with the flexibility to purchase items that can improve
their homes or possibly donate to others.

Green Iowa AmeriCorps 6 | P a g e

Internal Situation Analysis

Green Iowa AmeriCorps is a non-profit organization that focuses on helping Iowans become
more energy efficient through residential weatherization, energy education, and community
outreach services. They provide Home Energy Audits that are free to community members in
need, which result in trained volunteers offering services to weatherize community members
homes. These services are free of charge and crucial to the families of Iowa and more
importantly to qualifying families of Black Hawk County and the Cedar Valley. To ensure they
have made a difference in these homes, there is also an included post-weatherization evaluation,
guaranteeing and improvement in energy efficiency.

Green Iowa AmeriCorps rely solely on donations to provide these services, unfortunately not all
their recipients qualify for free materials, but are always guaranteed the free labor. There is also a
shortage in donated supplies needed for weatherization purposes. They are in need of more
recognition and promotion of their philanthropic services which is possible through growth of
their educational outreach. This growth of educational outreach as well as the

Green Iowa AmeriCorps 7 | P a g e

External Situation Analysis

Green Iowa AmeriCorps have a small number of competitors in the area. Their biggest
competition is other non-profit organizations looking for donations especially during the holiday
season. What sets them apart from other non-profits is the fact that their donations go directly to
citizens of Black Hawk County and benefit the members of the local community. Another
external strength we have is our dedication to keeping Iowa and, more importantly, America
green. The time and labor donated through the services of Green Iowa are not only investments
in the physical homes, but also the families within them.

The current state of the economy is a significant factor in external weaknesses. It affects not only
the recipients of the services but also Green Iowa AmeriCorps. When the economy is down,
consumers will be less willing to participate in donation drives or offer unpaid labor. Another
external weakness is how the weather impacts consumer behavior. Treacherous driving
conditions could decrease shopping traffic in home improvement stores which may lead to a
decrease in donated supplies. The weather can also affect travel to and from the homes and
families needing weatherization services.

Green Iowa AmeriCorps 8 | P a g e

Competitors
Green Iowa AmeriCorps has no competitors that offer the same weatherization services on a
consistent basis for free. However, they do compete with other deserving charities and nonprofits
for donations especially during the winter months. These local organizations include churches,
food banks, The Salvation Army, Toys for Tots, and Boys and Girls Club of America.

Green Iowa AmeriCorps 9 | P a g e

Client Limits
The limitations of Green Iowa AmeriCorps revolve around financial flexibility; this lack of flexibility
in financials leads to several problems. Not only is the organization unable to provide all necessary
materials and/or services for complete weatherization but they are also unable to reach assist all
families in need in the Cedar Valley. Lack of sufficient funding impedes their ability to further
educate and reach out to the community.

Green Iowa AmeriCorps
(CEDAR FALLS, IA) Green Iowa AmeriCorps has a mission of making Iowa homes more
energy efficient through low impact weatherization, energy education, and community outreach.
Located in the Center for Energy and Environmental Education at University of Northern Iowa,
Green Iowa AmeriCorps is looking to partner with one or two department stores (Lowes, Home
Depot, Menards, etc.) using the giving tree approach. At the front of each department store,
there would be a tree with ornaments that have names of different support items on them that
shoppers will pick out to buy for people in need. For instance, an ornament would read
container of sealant, a shopper would buy the item, and the cashier would put the item under
another tree for someone in need. This will really help out those who cant afford to weatherize
their home, as the giving tree approach is a way to give back to the community.

companies to complete projects in different areas such as: education, public safety, healthcare,
and environmental protection.
President John F. Kennedy came up with the idea of AmeriCorps to provide urgently needed
services in urban and rural poverty areas, in the year 1963. Two years later, President Lyndon
B. Johnson was on board with the same idea, and launched the first group of twenty VISTA
(Volunteers in Service to America) volunteers, telling them that their pay would not be high, the
work would be difficult, but the reward and satisfaction will be high in serving those who needed
help. By the end of the year, more than two-thousand member were working for the America
VISTA organization, even though working conditions were horrendous, and pay was low. This

Green Iowa AmeriCorps
(CEDAR FALLS, IA) Making the publics homes more energy efficient is a main goal of Green
Iowa AmeriCorps. Sara Renn, a homeowner in the Cedar Valley, received a letter in the mail
from Waverly Light and Power to notify her of the partnership they recently formed with Green
Iowa AmeriCorps. This was perfect timing for Renn, because her home was built in 1914 and
survived a flood, but is in weary condition. She explains, The upstairs bedroom is very cold.
Our sons closet leaks freezing air from the attic into his room. The front door seeps air and our
basement has gaping leaks. These were great reasons to have Green Iowa AmeriCorps help her
out. After Green Iowa AmeriCorps re-weatherized her home, she could not have been happier.
The leaks into our sons room have been improved drastically, and our upstairs bedroom is not
as cold as it used to be. The Green Iowa AmeriCorps staff was very nice and explained
everything to me. They were thrilled with the final testing results and left smiling. The best part
was only after two weeks of the changes being in place, our gas bill went down $30.00 and our
electric bill went down almost $20.00!

Store Partnership Letter

Dear Friends of Green Iowa AmeriCorps,
Green Iowa has always been a partner in the community of Black Hawk County. Our
main goal has always been to help community members become more energy efficient. The
winter season is upon us, and with those cold temperatures brings high heating costs. There are
many families in the Cedar Valley area that are not able to afford to keep their houses warm this
winter. Many cannot withstand the changing temperatures, making it unsafe for all of these Iowa
families.
As Green Iowa AmeriCorps, we have made it our mission to help fix this problem. We
have many trained members who volunteer to come in weatherize these houses. There is no cost
for these home energy audit visits. This is only possible your help. During the month of
December it is our wish to set up one of your trees that is sold in your store, and use it for this
Project Giving Tree. This would give your customers an opportunity to donate materials or gift
cards that our staff will use to weatherize these homes.
This will benefit both Green Iowa as an organization, but also benefit your store. It
represents you to the community positively, by showing your partnership with a well-known
non-profit organization. This program will also help increase traffic in your store, and increase
sales. To make this program hassle free, we will do all the set up. We just ask for cooperation
from your staff, during this busy holiday month.
We appreciate that there are a lot of opportunities for giving back this upcoming holiday
season, but we hope that you choose to help us. Donations from companies like you help sustain
our organization and benefit the community which we serve.
