Text: How a Plant Grows by Bobbie Kalman (this lesson will focus
on section two: Parts of a Plant)
Other Materials: laptop, projector, science journals, Plickers, iPad

What are the parts of a plant?
How do the parts of a plant help it survive?

RI5: Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold

RI7: Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a
machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.

a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a

Students will describe how images contribute to their
understanding of text.

Students will describe the function of each part of a plant.

VI. Procedures:
Introduction
o Students will view the following video to actiivate prior
knowledge of the parts of a plant:

Teaching/Activities
o Using the book, How a Plant Grows by Bobbie Kalman, read
section two: Parts of a Plant.
o With students, discuss how the images on the pages, as
well as the text features, help to clarify the text.
o Using their science journals, students will draw their own
picture of a plant and label its parts. Students will also
write a sentence or two to describe the purpose of each of
the following plant parts: stem, roots and leaves.

Closure
o Using Plickers, students will answer the following
questions. The teacher will collect data by scanning their
answers with the iPad.
How does the stem help a plant?
A. Collects sunshine to make food.
B. Carries water and minerals from the roots.
D. Grows roots.
True/False, The roots absorb water and minerals from
the soil.
True/False, Leaves hold the plant in place.
