I always thought I would've become a doctor, a lawyer or an, engineer, the. ne jobs that were always considered to be { ares me Ehek Ecechung in Consederd & Geil the illustrious ones with the huge salaries. 1 was young then and immature in my thoughts about 2 what exactly were the things that made this life worthy. However, various experiences since then have altered my decisions on the career path and evidently my outlook on what was indeed life worthy and hence today I am proud to say that I am an educator. [y My first experience as a teacher was undoubtedly the greatest reason for my re-evaluation of my life choices. After completion of my CXC exams my father suggested that I get a job while awaiting results. I contemplated for a while what job could I have done and decided to start a local summer lessons program for form 1 kids. This decision came about actually by a recommendation by my aunt whom suggested that since I assisted my younger siblings with their homework, that I should utilize the experience I had and in tum gain some financial reward. To me it was easy money, so I decided to print some flyers and post it around my village. This was the start of the whole new me and the idea of me becoming a teacher was implanted in my head. DARRELL DULALCHAN (03725218) I started off with five children, all of whom were neighbours from varying backgrounds. I remember how patient I was and how intrigued I was that I could have taken information that I hhad leamt from my own teachers and project it into their minds. I remember the smiles on their faces when they understood a solution when I explained it to them, and how proud it made me when they got an answer correct. I gained a new understanding of what it meant to actually contribute to the development of an individual as well as of how much more I understood content that I had initially not understood fully when it was taught to me. This was a new me, an enlightened me. I had gained the respect of fellow human beings. Respect that no matter how Wr A inSe much my salary could have been I would never be able to purchase. 4“ This newfound passion of teaching gave me a newfound appreciation of the leaming process. I gained a greater admiration for the teachers that I had. I understood now why they expected the best from me and why they pushed me to become the best I could be. This admiration of the art of teaching, coupled with the past experiences I had gained during my first teaching experience, was the vehicle that brought me to where I am today as an educator. Not only has my past made me a teacher today but it has also given me the drive to be an all rounded teacher strive to improve myself as an educator. Hence, itis the reason why I have started this diploma in education. I may not be the engineer and the doctor I wanted to be. I may not have the high 4 mete salary I dreamed of as an adolescent, but I am a better person today. A person who has the ability ‘ to open the eyes of my students to a world of learning. Why be an engineer and create physical \y.2:c's structures when I can create better individuals. Why be a doctor and learn the workings of the “~* |“ fi human brain when I can mould the brain and improve the lives of others. a DARRELL DULALCHAN (03725218) Hence, these are the experiences of my life which were the stepping-stones that brought me to this point today. I look forward to having more experiences and touching the lives of more persons. I look forward to be remembered by my students not only as an educator but as a role model. A person whom one day when they themselves may write their own autobiography, may ‘mention me as a person who was instrumental in their own personal development as a person.
