Question
The air of velocity 15 m/s and
of density 1.3 kg/m3 is
h22
entering the Venturi tube
(placed in the horizontal
h11
position) from the right. The
radius of the wide part of the
tube is 1.0 cm; the radius of
the thin part of the tube is
0.5 cm. The tube of shape U
connecting wide and thin part of the main tube (see the
picture) is filled with the mercury of the density 13 600 kg/m3.
Determine what height difference will be stabilized between
the surfaces of the mercury in U-tube.

Notation
Given :
v1 = 15 m/s
r1 = 1.0 cm
h22

r2 = 0.5 cm
1 = 1.3 kg/m

2 = 13 600 kg/m3
h = ?

h11

Answer
p1 = p2 + ph

(1)

p1 p2 = 2(v22 v12)
Substituting this relation into
equation (2) we get:

p1 = p2 + h2g
h = p1 p2 / 2g

(2)
h = 2(v22 v12) / 22g

Use Bernoullis principle which for

steady flow in the Venturi tube
has this form:
(3)

(5)

Use the continuity equation for

steady flow to determine velocity:
S1v 1 = S 2 v2

p1 + 1v12 = p2 + 2v22

(4)

r12v1 = r22v2
v 2 = v 1 r 1 2 / r2 2

Numerically:

The difference between the levels of height of mercury in arms of Utube is approximately 1.6 cm.
