Introduction
o Started by F. L. BRAYNE, Deputy commissioner in the
Gurgaon district of Punjab.
o He intended to remove poverty through a mass movement.

o In this experiment village guide was appointed in each village,


this guide was acting as bridge between rural people and
researcher.
o In this they were mainly concentrating on Agriculture
development like improved seeds & implements, improved
method of cultivation.

o The work gathered momentum after 1933 when Mr. Brayne
was appointed as Commissioner of Rural Reconstruction in
the Punjab.
o In 1935-36, the Government of India granted Rs. 1 crore for
the work which acted as a stimulus.
o After that the work was transferred to the Cooperative
Department and Better Living Societies were organized to
take up this work in the villages.

Objectives
oTo increase Agricultural production
oImproving Education
oHealth and Sanitation facilities
oCo-operation and social development with greater vigor
oTo stop wastage of money on social and religious functions
oTo organize welfare programs.

Activities
1. Appointment of village guides.
2. Propaganda through films, folk songs, dramas and plays with
a view to increase farm yields and improving health
standards etc.
3. Rural Economics and domestic Economics Schools.

Result
o The village guides were non technical men so achievement
were less.
o Reforms were imposed on the people, rather than initiated
by themselves.
o This widened the gap between the 'haves and have-nots'.
o A one man show.

o No continuity in the work.
o Limited to few villages.
o Village guides were un-experienced and untrained.
