1983: Creation of the World Commission on Environment and Development
(WCED) for the development of the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP).
1987: Publication of the report "Our Common Future", prepared for the UN
by a Special Commission headed by the WCED Gro Harlem Brundtland,
former Prime Minister of Norway.
The Brundtland Report presents the first definition for Sustainable
Development as that which fulfills the needs of the current generation
without compromising the capacity of future generations to fulfill their own
needs".

1993: The EMAS (European Regulation) is published (a new edition is
released in 2003 to extend its application to all types of organizations).
1995: The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is
created.
1996: The ISO 14001 is published (a new edition is released in 2004).
1997: The Global Reporting Initiative is created for the production of
Sustainability Reports.
1999: Creation of the UN Global Compact (3 of its 10 principles are devoted
to the relationship between businesses and environment).
1999: Launch of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) to encourage
investment on sustainable companies.
2001: Launch of the FTSE4Good Index to encourage investment on ethical
companies.

Climate Change
1997 Kyoto Summit - Kyoto
Protocol.
The Countries that ratify it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in 20082012, by at least 5% below 1990s levels (EU member states must collectively
reduce by 8%).
It requires for its enforcement that the ratifying countries total more than
55% of emissions in 1990.
1999: The US announces that it will not ratify the Kyoto Protocol (36.1%).
2002: The European Union ratifies the Kyoto Protocol (24.2%).
2002: The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) starts in the UK (currently the main
charity for companies and cities to exchange information related to the
environment).
2003: Emissions trading of greenhouse gases starts (the main flexibility
mechanism from those spawned of the Kyoto Protocol).
2004: Russia ratifies the Kyoto Protocol (17.4%), enforcing it in 2005
September
(surpassing the total of 55%). Master in European Construction Engineering
After the break of the Kyoto Protocol, the last three COP (Durban 2011),
(Doha 2012) and (Warsaw 2013), have been a fruitless attempt to follow and
increase upon the Kioto limitations, enlarging extending its presence until
2020, leaving the climate Change Problem without solution due not
reaching a global agreement.

1983: Creacin de la Comisin Mundial sobre Medio Ambiente y el
Desarrollo (CMMAD) para el desarrollo del Programa del Medio Ambiente
de las Naciones Unidas (PNUMA).
1987: Publicacin del informe Nuestro Futuro Comn elaborado para la
ONU por una comisin especial de la CMMAD dirigida por Gro Harlem
Brundtland, ex-Primera Ministra de Noruega.
El Informe Brundtland recoge la primer definicin de Desarrollo Sostenible
como aquel que "satisface las necesidades de la generacin actual sin
comprometer la capacidad de las generaciones futuras para satisfacer sus
propias necesidades".

Cambio Climtico
1997: En la COP+5 se firma el
Protocolo de Kyoto.
Tras la ruptura del acuerdo del Protocolo de Kyoto las tres ltimas COP (Durban
2011), (Doha 2012), (Warsaw 2013), han sido un intento baldo de seguir y
aumentar las limitaciones de Kioto prolongando su actuacin hasta 2020,
quedando sin resolver realmente el problema del Cambio Climtico, al no
alcanzarse un acuerdo mundial.

Gestin ambiental
1993: Se publica el reglamento europeo EMAS (en 2003 se publica una
nueva edicin para hacerlo aplicable a todo tipo de organizaciones).
1995: Se crea el World Business Council for Sustainable Development
(WBCSD).
1996: Se publica la norma ISO 14001 (en 2004 se publica una nueva edicin
de la norma ISO 14001).
