Topic: Relational Aggression
Lesson Type: Social/Emotional
Population Served: 5th grade
Goal of Lesson: 5th grade students will learn what relational aggression is, the ways it can be
expressed and what to do if it happens to you.
ASCA Standards Measured:
- A:A- students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective
learning in school across the life span.
- PS:A- students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and interpersonal skills to help them
understand and respect self and others.
- PS:B- Students will make decisions, set goals, and take necessary action to achieve goals.
- PS:C- Students will understand safety and survival skills.
Materials Needed: Worksheets and the book My Secret Bully by Trudy Ludwig.
Evaluation: Completed worksheets and 5th grade behavior referrals related to relational
regression.
Lesson Plan:
1. Personal Introduction
2. Introduction/Expectations Today we will be learning about relational aggression.
3. Pass out worksheet and information sheet for parents/guardians.
4. Write Relational Aggression on board.
5. Ask: Does anyone know what relational aggression means?
a. Acts of emotional bullying (often hidden among a network of friends)
b. instead of using fists as displays of physical aggression
i. Emotional bullying; using words, relationships, and gestures as their
methods (weapons) of aggression.
2. Prepare class for short book My Secret Bully.
a. Discuss the characters. (Monica, Katie, Sarah)
3. Read the book My Secret Bully to the class.
4. Ask for responses from class.
5. Discussion questions:
a. How was Katie being mean to Monica?
i. What did she say?
ii. What did she do?
b. What could Sarah have done to help Monica when Katie was bullying her?
c. How did Monica stop the bullying?
6. What are some weapons that are used in relational aggression?
a. Gossip
b. Rumors
c. Cyberbullying
d. Ignoring
e. Excluding
f. Shunning

7. If relational aggression happens within your group of friends how do you think youd like
to deal with it whether its happening to you or one of your friends?
a. Let others know you dont like it and it wont be tolerated.
