THE CASA DORADA OF TARIJA

The Casa Dorada is one of two beautiful castle-like buildings

in Tarija built by the same man: Moiss Navajas Ichazo, a
very wealthy businessman who, not having any descendents
of his own, decided these two imposing mansions would be
what he would be remembered for. The most famous is the
Casa Dorada, now a cultural symbol of the valleys of Tarija.
It is located one block from the central plaza and today it is a
Museum. Everything inside is original.

THE REPRESA SAN JACINTO

Represa San Jacinto is a large dam built along the river that
runs through Tarija, Bolivia which has created a navegable
lake.
Here you can take a row boat or canoe out onto the lake, or
enjoy fresh fish for lunch at one of the tiny restaurants on the
shore.
It's a very pretty area about 15 minutes from the city
center and worth a morning or afternoon visit.

THE CASA VIEJA

Casa Vieja (which means 'old house') is one of the oldest wineries
and vineyards in Tarija, Bolivia. Located in the tiny town
of Uriondo in Valle Concepcion, less than an hour from Tarija, its
100% adobe structure is still intact.
Casa Vieja is one of the best known wineries in Tarija and is a
staple of almost all Tarija wine tours. Not only is it interesting to
view its vineyards, but the hacienda itself is made completely of
adobe (mud and straw) and is still standing after nearly 4
centuries.

THE CASA DE MOTO MENDEZ

The home of Moto Mendez (whose real name is Eustaquio

Mendez) must be visited when you travel Tarija Bolivia. You'll
find the house of this one-handed war hero in San Lorenzo.
His house in San Lorenzo, just half an hour from the city of
Tarija, is now a museum. It's interesting to see how very
simply some Spaniards and mestizos lived during Colonial
times. Most of us assume the Spanish all flouted their wealth
and lived in lavish mansions. Moto Mendez, a mestizo, was
different. He lived in a small adobe house made with handhewn woodenbeams with his mother one block from the tiny
central plaza of San Lorenzo.
