Current Placement: Amy Houston Academy K- 1st grade; Previous placement Pastor 1st grade
I am finishing my last semester at ASU and my current internship is in a K-1 classroom at Amy
Houston Academy. In May 2016 I will have a degree with dual certification in elementary and
special education. I am most interested in teaching in a special education setting. As a nontraditional student my education as a teacher began with raising my 5 children, all of whom are
adults and either graduated or current college students. I have 6 years of experience as a special
education paraprofessional. That experience and my student teaching have helped me developed
my belief that all students regardless of their background, or ability level can and will learn. My
education has taught me to look for student strengths and weaknesses and develop strategies to
help students become successful socially and academically. I have learned that strategies like
adding exercise to your lesson will improve student engagement, having good classroom
management skills are essential, and to always be prepared, especially for the unexpected. The
focus of my classroom management is on a boundary-based discipline because I believe students
need boundaries to feel safe. In my future classroom I will set high expectations for all, and
provide opportunities for everyone to succeed.
