APTC celebrates students success

Over 50 students of the Australia-Pacific

Technical College (APTC) were awarded with
qualifications in 15 programs in Nadi on 22
April 2016.
APTC is an innovative development
project funded by the Australian Government,
delivering
Australian-standard
skills
and
qualifications for a wide range of vocational
careers for skilled workers across the Pacific.
Since APTCs establishment, the college
has graduated more than 2840 Fiji citizens
with Australian-standard qualifications.
Culinary Ambassador for Fiji Airways and the
Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism Fiji
Grown campaign, Mr Lance Seeto delivered
the keynote address.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Seeto said
that it is an exciting time for Fijis development
as a nation.
We are undergoing an extraordinary
renaissance of bridging the traditional with
the modern. We see it in our food, agriculture,
fashion, trade and tourism. But we need a
highly skilled workforce to achieve and deliver
world class goods and services to a global
market.
Gone are the days when mediocracy and
Fiji time was the accepted standard. We need
workers who will go above and beyond to
challenge the status quo. This is where APTC
programs play a critical role in giving Fijians
internationally recognised qualifications and
exposure to overseas knowledge, he added.
Five students graduated with a Commercial
Cookery qualification. APTC cookery students
in Fiji are trained to prepare dishes using
locally grown produce at the Pacific Fusion
Restaurant.
Earlier this month, the Pacific Fusion

Also present at the graduation ceremony
was the First Secretary of the Australian High
Commission in Fiji, Mr Simon Starr who
delivered the closing address.
The graduating class included 16 Fashion

These employers supported their employees to
attend training two days per week. The training
space for the students was provided by Danam
(Fiji) Ltd and Motiram.
The APTC Fiji campus has also been
actively assisting with relief efforts in Fiji, after
Tropical Cyclone Winston. Staff and students

travelled to remote villages and settlements

in Naitasiri and Tailevu to help clean up and
provide relief supplies. APTC carpentry
students, led by national trainer Mr Sajendra
Bali, helped repair and rebuild houses. A water
tank donated by R.C. Manubhai was also
installed at Dranu village in Tailevu.
In addition to its campus in Fiji, APTC
has campuses in Papua New Guinea, Samoa,
Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

Mr. Rao said that environmental monitors

IF you have been having fever,

The Centres for Disease,Control and

virus wont even know they have the disease
because they wont have symptoms. The
incubation period (the time from exposure to
symptoms) for Zika virus disease is not known,
but is likely to be a few days to a week.
The illness is usually mild with symptoms

lasting for several days to a week after being

bitten by an infected mosquito.
The Centers for Disease Control and

to its list of countries and territories where the
Zika virus is actively spreading.
The archipelago joins 40 other locations,

People usually dont get sick enough to go

For this reason, many people might not realize

Zika virus usually remains in the blood of
an infected person for about a week but it can
be found longer in some people.
Once a person has been infected, he or she
is likely to be protected from future infections.
Diagnosis:
The symptoms of Zika are similar to those

There is no vaccine to prevent or medicine

Home for Naidu family

MOTHER nature is known to be cruel

at times and the people of Fiji have certainly
received a nasty blow from cyclone Winston in
February.
Thousands of families have been affected
and of utmost concern is the extent of damage
to infrastructure and homes which has never
been seen during the natural disasters that have
been experienced over the years.
The main concern after the disaster for
affected families is to ensure that the basic need
of shelter is fulfilled and for parents who have
very young children it is more of a concern as
protection is essential for their children against
disease outbreaks.
One such family who have lost their home
during the disaster is the Naidu family of
Velovelo tramline road who are now struggling
to re-build their home for their two young
children, three year old Krishant and two year
old Krishav.
Their plight was highlighted on social
media and Soroptimist International Lautoka
club members visited the family to access their
situation and provide assistance.
Since, the family had completely lost their
home the club decided to assist with building

material through funds that had been donated

by a well wisher of the club Reshma Singh
of Australia. SI Lautoka has provided 150
building blocks and roofing iron to the family
this month.
It has taken a while to secure the building
material since there has been a shortage of
materials after the cyclone.
According to Mrs Naidu the family is
thankful to the club for their vital assistance as
their family has faced a lot of difficulties after
the disastrous effect of the cyclone.
My elder son got really sick and was
diagnosed with dengue fever since we only
have a basic shelter of a tent at the moment
which has been provided by the government.
There is a lot of health issues after the
cyclone and it is a struggle to ensure that our
childrens health is protected.
Meanwhile, SI Lautoka President Ranjini
Sanjay informed that the club decided to assist
this family since they are in great need and
also since they are in Lautoka it is easy to visit
on a regular basis and keep updated on their
progress.
She also mentioned that it is not possible
to assist everyone who has been affected so the
goal of the club is to rehabilitate at least one
needy family for now.

Devotion for Lord Rama

Devotees in Velovelo Lautoka celebrating Lord Ramas birth on the final day of the Ram
Naumi festival
Zareena Bi
THE month of April has once again given
Hindu devotees across the world an opportunity
to celebrate the ideals of Lord Rama during
eight days of Ram Naumi observance which
culminated on Friday 15.
In Fiji the catastrophic effect of cyclone
Winston and the subsequent floods did not
dampen the spirit of the devotees who gathered
together in their Mandalis and at temples to
listen to the recitations from the holy Ramayan.
Also, in some places electricity has not
been restored after the cyclone and even where
electricity has been restored followers had to
deal with constant power cuts which resulted

in people being proactive in keeping standby

generators.
Lord Rama is the main protagonist of the
Ramayanwhich actually outlines the history
before his birth, the reason for his birth and
his admirable deals despite facing difficult
situations in life.
There are a lot of lessons to be learnt
from the Ramayan and each chapter takes on
a deeper meaning when recited on subsequent
occasions.
The beauty about the Holy Scriptures is
that its teachings have relevance even today.
It has been said that one who approaches Lord
Rama with love and worshipfulness becomes
large-hearted, pure in spirit, good-natured and

University of the South Pacific Lautoka

graduation ceremony in Suva on March 21.
I thank the Lord Almighty, for giving
me strength and wisdom, my family for their
support and guidance throughout my study
and the staff and students of Lautoka Andhra
Sangam and Lautoka Primary School who
assisted me in units that required practicum,
observations and presentations to be made.
The moral teaching of my parent to work
hard, conquer and achieve my dreams gave
me the boost to break through the barriers of
difficulties that came my way.
Sharma informed that studying through

and a lot of sacrifice and planning is needed for

this kind of achievement
Working and studying at the same time is
not easy especially if you are in the teaching

challenging and demanding.
Studying through the Distance Flexible
Learning mode was challenging as most of
the time you are on your own with the course

MOTHERS DAY SPECIAL

Unconditional love of mothers

MOTHERS Day is a celebration honoring

the mother of the family, as well as motherhood,
maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers
in society.
The bond between a mother and child
is a very special one and is not an easy one
to explain. The fact of the matter is that this
bond is created in a mothers womb well
before the birth of the child which makes this
attachment so special and different from any
other relationship.
Traditionally mothers day is celebrated on

the second Sunday of May and this year it falls

on May 8.
On this day most mothers are given special
treatment where they take a day off from house
work and cooking and families either have a
special menu which they prepare or mothers are
taken out to their favourite restaurants.
Children also take this opportunity to give
special gifts to their mothers, mother-in-law,
grandmothers and aunts.
This special time for families is also one
which has commercial benefits for businesses
as they promote products through sale prices
which they know will appeal to mothers.

This in turn makes the process of buying gifts

for their mothers easier for the children.
However, on this occasion those mothers
who are unfortunate should not be forgotten
as we do have mothers who live alone either
in their own homes orat aged care homes who
look forward on this day for families to visit
them.
So on this day these mothers need to be
given a gift of time by their families.
While versions of Mothers Day are
celebrated throughout the world, traditions vary
depending on the country.
From the religious aspect theRoman

Catholic Church strongly associates mothers

day with revering of the Virgin Mary where
special service is held in churches and homes
which have the shrine of Mother Mary.
In Islam mothers hold a very high position
in religious matters. According to the Quran,
Heaven is said to be found under a mothers
feet, meaning that one can attain admission into
heaven after death if they are caring and loving
sons and daughters to their mothers.
While in the Hindu tradition, Mothers Day
is called MatraDiwas and is celebrated in
countries with a Hindu population.

My Angel

My mother is a special part

Of all thats cherished in my heart,
She is my pearl, my soul, my mate;
She is the one to make life great.
She is an angel without the wings,
Who makes life special with the littlest things,
Whenever Im in need of love,
She is there from the heavens above;
Whenever Im in need of a shoulder,
Theres no one as devoted as my mother.
Her presence and love have always been
there,
Everything in her nature is to only care.
With every soft hug and kiss
The world seems more beautiful and blessed.
Im sorry for all the times I caused you pain,
But after these brief storms my love still
remains.
I love you so much,
I will love you foreverI wrote your name on my heart
And it will stay there forever, and ever...

Why Mother is Special

A mother is someone who loves you
Who cares for you in every way
She sits down and listens to
what ever you want to say
She always thinks you are beautiful
Never puts you down
She always has a smile
To wipe away your fear & tear
A mother is someone who believes in you
Always pushes you to go far
Tells you to believe in yourself
No matter who you are
A mother is the one who helps you
For showing the way
For smiling every day.
A mother is like an angel
Although without the wings
She tells you to enjoy
Lifes most smallest things
I really love my mother
She means so much to me
Thats how it always will be
So this day is so special,
Because youre so special too,
Just remember one thing,
That I do love you.

Government seeks help from accountants

FIJIS accountants have been urged to

help make Fijis economy more resilient by
adopting innovative strategies and business
practices.
The call was made by Attorney-General
and Minster for Finance Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum during a key-note address at the
opening of the Fiji Institute of Accountants
Congress in Denarau recently.
The AG encouraged the private sector
to help widen Fijis economic base by
harnessing the energy and creativity of
younger members in the business community.
70 per cent of our population in under
the age of 40. If we are able to mainstream our
young people into the business community,
we can access innovative ways of thinking
that can lift Fiji from its current designation
as a small and vulnerable developing state,
he said.
The AG pointed to Fijis vulnerability
to climate-related natural disasters as a

major impediment to greater economic

development. He stressed a need for the
accounting industry to advance their capacity
in the arena of climate finance.
In Fiji, one climatic event can
fundamentally destroy the economy for
decades. Fiji is currently exploring options
to finance climate adaptation measures and
will likely partner with the private sector to
develop the capability to access these funds
from international organisations, he said.
The AG also stressed the important
role that Fijis accountants have in fighting
corruption on the part of their clients and
upholding high ethical standards in the
profession.
The moment you prioritise what is best
for the country and the Fijian people, you can
rid our business community of the corruption
related issues that are holding us back. It is
about being patriotic and doing what is best
for Fiji, he said.

THE Minister for Health and Medical

Services,JoneUsamate and the Minister
for Agriculture and National Disaster
Management Office, Inia Seruiratu met
with the Korovou Medical Health division
staff recently to discuss issues related to the
prevalence of typhoid in the district.
The increase in typhoid has drawn much
attention since the aftermath of severe TC
Winston and the authorities concerned have
been working together to address the issue.
Subdivisional
Medical
Officer
DrIlisapeciLasaro informed the ministers
that 25 confirmed cases of typhoid were
recorded in Korovou this year.
The majority of cases (15) were recorded
in Qelekuro village, and health authorities
have intensified awareness programmes
in the villages in order to prevent it from
spreading further.
DrLasaro said that the medical outreach
team in Korovou has been working closely
with the villages. Their efforts have been

very productive, with almost 70% of the cases

being contained.
We have been conducting meetings
with villages with the help of Church leaders
and elders to discuss proper hygiene and
sanitation, as these practices decrease the risk
of typhoid, said DrLasaro.
Minister Seruiratu suggested that the
medical outreach teams work with mothers
and discuss ways to help prevent diseases.
It is a very effective process to work with
mothers to address typhoid related diseases,
said Minister Seruiratu.
Mr Seruiratu further assured the staff that
the National Disaster Management Office
will be providing more water tanks to be
distributed to the villages for the safe keeping
of water.
Health Minister Jone Usamate thanked
staff for assisting the villages with medical
interventions to minimise the spread of
typhoid.

Thierry Henry a fan of Rashford

Marcus Rashford

ARSENAL legend Thierry Henry admits

hes a huge fan of Manchester United youngster
Marcus Rashford.
The 18-year-old emerged from Uniteds
academy in February to become one of Louis
van Gaals most important players in the
second half of the season.
The teenager scored twice on his Europa
League debut and followed that up with
another double three days later in a 3-2 win
against Arsenal.
Many are tipping the forward to be a shock
inclusion in Roy Hodgsons England squad

this summer and, though Henry thinks its a

little early for that, hes admitted hes a fan of
the youngster.
First and foremost I would like to say
that Im a big fan of the kid, Henry told Sky
Sports.
I like the way he plays, hes direct, he
thinks about his movement, hes always in the
box.
I think it will do [Rashford] good to have a
tournament with the U21s or U19s or whatever
its going to be. But, I also think, if someone is
injured, is he going to be the next one on the
list? Who knows.

Ranieri: We Go For The Title

Source: Leicester City FC
AFTER Leicester City secured a spot in
next seasons UEFA Champions League group
stages, manager Claudio Ranieri says his side
will now fight to win the Barclays Premier
League title.
The Foxes have the chance to move eight
points clear at the Premier League summit
with a victory over Swansea City at King
Power Stadium on Sunday, with second-placed
Tottenham Hotspur not playing until Monday
evening.
The confirmation of Champions League
group stage football next term secured after
Manchester City drew at Newcastle United
on Tuesday has been labelled as a fantastic
achievement by Ranieri, and now the City
boss has set his sights on winning the Premier
League.
Ranieri said of European qualification:

SOUTHS coach Michael Maguire says
Adam Reynolds may have suffered a second
broken jaw of the season in a late tackle by
Bronco Adam Blair at Suncorp Stadium.
Brisbane prop Blair was put on report
for a 56th minute tackle off the ball which
was late and high on the Rabbitohs halfback.
Reynolds, playing his second match
since returning from a broken jaw he
suffered in Round 1, gamely played out the
match after a medical assessment as South
Sydney were beaten 30-8.
But more pain could be to come for the
NSW Origin hopeful and the Rabbitohs.

Its a great achievement unbelievable.
Now, we go straight away to try to win the title.
Only this remains.
The [Champions League] music is
fantastic! Everybody is happy. Its good
because its a big achievement for Leicester,
for the fans.
Big teams will arrive here with a big
challenge. Its a great achievement and Im
very proud. Im very happy.
Ranieri set his side a target of amassing
79 points at the turn of the year and while
that will certainly be an impressive haul, the
Italian feels they will need more if they wish to
become 2015/16 Premier League champions.
He added: I have 79 points, but thats not
enough. Now we have to fight more now. I

I always believe, Im a positive man. If
Tottenham go over us, congratulations. But I
prefer to stay five points above. If we win the

Kenya eyes Olympic 7s success

citystarnews@kaiviti.com

APRIL

20, 2016

Source: Africanews
WITH Kenyas famed track and field
team still unsure whether it will be allowed to
compete at the Rio Olympics, an unlikely new
medal prospect has emerged for the African
nation their mens sevens rugby outfit.
Hardly a world power in the 15-a-side
game, Kenya has suddenly popped up as a
genuine medal contender in sevens, which
will be played in Rio as rugby returns to the
Olympics after a 92-year hiatus.
Currently ranked seventh in the world,
ahead of traditional heavyweights including
England and France, Kenya served notice
of their intentions for Rio by winning the
Singapore leg of the sevens world series,
beating Fiji in Sundays final.
It was Kenyas first tournament win in
a world series event after they had made two
previous finals, in Australia in 2009 and New
Zealand in 2013, and it could not have come
at a better time with the Olympics just four
months away and the countrys athletics team
under a doping cloud.
For our players, this win will give them
huge amounts of self-belief, Kenyan coach
Benjamin Ayimba said.
Weve always had the potential, but
knowing now that we can beat the best will give
us even more confidence for success in future
tournaments. This will make us an even better
and more dangerous team to play against.
As Kenyas players celebrated their win with
a gospel song and impromptu jig at Singapores
National Stadium, their victory lit up rugbys
social media sites, with even Kenyan President
Uhuru Kenyatta tweeting his congratulations to
the underdog team.
Their emergence is well-timed for Kenya,
with the countrys track and field team facing
the possibility of being banned from Rio unless
it passes a new anti-doping law following a
string of positive tests.
Kenya has only ever won medals in two
different sports at the Olympics: athletics and
boxing. Of the 25 gold medals Kenya has won,
24 have been in track and field. But the rugby

The Kenya 7s team with the Singapore 7s trophy as they arrive back home.
sevens team is hoping to change that.
We hope it inspires the kids to play rugby
and it just gives them a lot more heroes to look
up to so, for us, its a major milestone, Ayimba
said.
The target for Rio is always to win.
Kenya already has some budding heroes in its
ranks, none more so than Collins Injera, the
29-year-old speedster who ranks second on the
all-time sevens try-scoring lists.
Injera kicked a 40-metre penalty after the
siren to clinch a 15-12 win over Argentina in
the semi-finals, then scored two of his teams
six tries in the 30-7 rout of Fiji in the final.
Like most of the top Kenyan rugby players,

Injera grew up running and playing football

before switching to rugby in his early teens. The
son of a professor, he made his international
debut a decade ago and has been scoring tries at
a regular frequency, though he is more widely
known for what he once did after one of his
touchdowns.
At the London Sevens last year, Injera
celebrated his 200th try by pulling a marker
pen from his socks and scrawling his name on
a television camera, as tennis players often do.
Unaware that the cameras need a protective

His try-scoring celebrations have been

more subdued since then and even as he closes

in on the all-time record, his only thoughts are
on winning in Rio, where Kenya have already
qualified for both the mens and womens
tournaments.
Kenyan rugby has come a long way, its
such an amazing thing, Injera said.
Everyone is working towards the Olympics
so for us, (winning in Singapore) was a very big
step.
Rugby is really developing in Kenya.

to help build up the game and now that weve
won a final, more people will start following
us.

Five things we learnt in Hong Kong and Singapore

national side back from Hong Kong and Singapore 7s
Source: worldrugby.com
WHAT did we learn from the seventh and eight
rounds of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens
Series, we take a look at five key points.
KENYAS DAY FINALLY ARRIVED...
How can we not start with these guys? What
a moment to witness their first-ever Cup title
in their 115th tournament. Hats off to the all
involved, its been a long time coming but it
is a fantastic achievement and one that was
well deserved. Benjamin Ayimba has brought
Kenya back into the mix after a disappointing
last season, and has made the Olympics even
harder to predict than ever before!

Maika Kasami

SEVENS IS ALREADY
OLYMPIC GOLD

STRIKING

Onto the Olympics and what we saw in

Singapore and Hong Kong was the fact that
rugby sevens, its players, and all involved are
already at Olympic standards on and off the
pitch. These are the stars of the Olympics, and
the next generation of idols for many watching
on around the world come August. We hope
Rio is ready!
SAMOA FIRM FAVOURITES FOR RIO
In June the last place in the mens tournament
for Rio will be decided. Three core teams
Samoa, Canada and Russia will go up
against 13 other regional qualifiers including

Zimbabwe, Chile and Germany. Having beaten
both Fiji and New Zealand in Singapore,
Samoa could be finding form just at the right
time to secure their place in Rio.
TRANSITION TO #RUGBY7S IS NOT
EASY!
Weve said it before with the likes of Sonny
Bill Williams, Quade Cooper and others, but
this weekend we saw Nate Ebner return to the
USA Sevens side. Hes played before but never
on the series and, having headed off to NFL
where he won the Super Bowl with the Patriots
last year, Ebner has returned with one eye on
Rio. It was quite the welcome back into the
sport from Frances Virimi Vakatawa.

THE BEST DOUBLE HEADER?

Of all the double headers this season, Hong
Kong and Singapore could possibly be the
best! A sell-out Hong Kong, and over 45,000
in Singapores return to the series after 10
years, many fans will be thinking both could
be worth a trip with them being so close next
season! Great rugby and a party atmosphere
at both, with stars such as The Hoff and Pete
Tong providing extra entertainment. Singapore
also impressed on its return to the series and
the National Stadium was a perfect venue.
Were now all excited for the final two events
in Paris and London with a series finale to end
all series finales!

Suva, Nadi back to domestic duties

AFTER their unsuccessful attempt at the

Oceania Champions League in Auckland,
New Zealand, Nadi and Suva are set to resume
participation in the domestic competition
beginning with the Vodafone National Football
League.
Both the Jetsetters and the Capital City
side recorded a win each from three group
matches respectively to bow out of the regional
competition.
Both camps would agree that the level of
competition in the O-League is far superior
compared to Fiji soccer and a lot needs to be
done in order to match other Island nations.
However, the two teams may have gained
knowledge and experience from playing
against semi-professional and professional
players and it would only be appropriate if
they adhere to the lessons learnt and come
back stronger and better in future challenges
and attempts in such high profile competition.
Meanwhile, Lautoka earned its first points in
the National League following its 2-0 win over
Nadroga at Prince Charles Park. Striker Valerio
Nawatu has scored two from two appearances
and is surely one of Coach Johnny Williams
reliable front man. The other goal for the Blues
was scored by young Mohd Shazil Ali.
Speaking to Fiji FA media, Williams said
his side now has the mindset to fight for the
win in every game.
We have started to fight for the win as I
think its been long coming for Lautoka.
We still not there yet as we getting into the
shape but I believe we will do better in our next
game.
Finishing needs improvement and fitness

as the players were on a long break after the
cyclone, said Williams.
In its third outing, the Sugar City side edged
the national FFA regional academy in a buildup match 2-1 at the Ba Football Academy. The
latter side national will be featuring weekly in
the national league with no points offered to
either side.
Fiji FA vice president and National League
Board chairman Yogeshwar Singh said there
has been lot of disruption on Vodafone Premier
League but they we are looking for options to
complete the league on time.
We have lots of delays in the league but
we will look at best option to reschedule the
matches, said Singh.

Allen holds aloft Lautoka Open title

MAIKA KASAMI

NATIONAL team golfer Olaf Allen Junior took out the 80th Tiffanys of Canada Lautoka Open Golf Championship
after beating fellow national reps Anuresh Chandra and Asish Kumar to claim top honours.
Allen recorded 105 to win by a single shot.
The Suva based Allen had first tasted success back in 2002.
For the records on the honours board, this was his second LGC Open title.
Top favourites in Roneel Prakash, Zabir Ali and defending champion James Krishna all failed to match Allen.
Allen said he was proud to win again at the Golf Link course after as many years.
For me this course, fairways and greens was the best ever and Im happy to take the title away from Lautoka.
The young Rizwan Hussein won the B-grade with sponsor Mahendra Gopal claiming the C-grade title.

THE Fiji Rugby Union would like to reiterate that all the Fiji Rugby

by the FRU insurance cover
which include
any form of treatment or

In the case of Savenaca Rawaca, upon returning to Fiji and following
his medical assessments, Rawacas initial treatment plan diagnosed by
his Physician who advised him to continue treatment as an outpatient in
the Outpatients Department at the Suva Private Hospital which FRU had
facilitated.
We acknowledge the assistance provided by the Fijian Teachers
Association; however, as the Employer for Rawaca, FRU is deeply
concerned since Rawaca had accepted the offer of assistance in good
faith not knowing that FTA would turn their offer of assistance into a
cheap publicity stunt compromising the provisions of his employment
contract with the FRU.
The FRU had received calls from Rawaca in relation to his concerns
about the media being involved and FRU had tried to intervene but the
matter had already been covered by the Media.
FRU is calling on those intending to assist our National Rugby
Representatives in a similar circumstance to contact FRU to avoid
similar situations.

AUCKLAND City Football Club turned the tables on Wellington
FC 3-0 when it mattered recording its sixth successive win in the

Wellington had beaten City in the domestic final, but a goal from
Micah Leaalafa two-minutes into the match ensured there was not
going to be a repeat of their earlier meeting.
Solomon Islander Leaalafa scored again with less than
10-minutes to play, the third for City to seal the match after Clayton
Lewis had made it 2-0 on the 67th minute.
Fijis representative Nadi and Suva bowed out in the pool stages

NAITASIRI, Suva, Northland, Nadi and
Namosi came away with wins in Week 1 of the
Skipper Cup competition.
Naitasiri downed defending champions
Nadroga 28-22 to make a perfect start at
Lawaqa Park in a Friday night match.
The Highlanders have in recent years
recorded first up wins against the Stallions in
the Lions den and the result came as no surprise.
Nadroga have on a number of occassions gone
on to win the competition after failing to leap
over the first hurdle.

They are sure going to bounce back and

their second opponent is expected to bear the
full brunt of the first up loss.
Capital City side Suva put on a brave display to
see off Tavua 45-20 at Garvey Park.
The sky blues are one of the top contenders
for the cup and have made their intentions
known.
Northland picked up their first win of the
season from first outing and is sure to build on
the momentum.
Nadi, disappointed last year bowing out to

display tamed Tailevu with a big 34-3 win at
Prince Charles Park. Tailevu, lucky to have not
featured in the promotion relegation began the
season from where they left off last season. It
seems another uphill battle from the word go
for the greens and they need to put their acts
together now rather than later.

The Ben Ryan coached side then face
Wales at 9-14pm on the same day before

Barring any upsets, the national side who

Australia or England.
And if the series leaders does finish second

Replicating
Olympic
feeling

Maika Kasami
THE Hong Kong and Singapore 7s
tournaments has been described as the toughest
so far for the Vodafone Fiji sevens team.
Coach Ben Ryan told world rugby that the
national side was really put into pressure in the
last two tournaments which is what they should
expect at the Olympics in Rio.
The national side won all their six games
at Happy Valley but lost twice at the National
Stadium in Singapore, going down to Samoa
(14-28) in the opener and allowing Kenya to
create history losing in the final 7-30.
Ryan said they had to play their get out of
jail card early on.
In Hong Kong against Canada and Kenya
we were put under pressure. That is why sevens
is so good, teams put you under pressure and
with limited time you try to decide the game
on your last play. I hope it continues to be like
that, said Ryan.
You have to have a number of ingredients
right. You have to be fit on purpose. You have
to have clarity on your top two-inch (head) and
we have to make sure we stick to our game
plan and work your plan and trust the ability of
everyone.
Adding on to that we have last plays where
we cannot afford to knock-on or get the ball
turned over, we have to get forward and do all

Sports

the world sevens series.

the things right when it matters, the English
man added.
He said teams have their own style of play
and they have decided they are going to stick
to their own style which is playing a high risk
game.
Its certainly a risk if you make a mistake

but we are going to take risk and move forward.

Meanwhile, Ryan said players getting injured
now and are ruled out for a month or two could
be left out of the Olympics team.
You put yourself at risk if you are out for
one or two months. There are 20 players fighting
for 12 slots, but we are close, I mean I wanted

a local based squad, we are almost there.I think

there are five overseas boys that we are going
to give a run out to, they are world class players
and if they show the appetite, the ability, then
we will be full on for the eight to nine weeks of
preparation for the Olympics.
