Triaging Telephone Calls

QuestionsCaller 1 is interested in a new drug that she saw advertised and wants to ask the
doctor about its side effects.
Caller 2 is breaking out in hives and his throat is swelling.
Caller 3 is a physician who wants to speak with your physician about a patient.
Caller 4 would like to schedule an appointment for a routine physical exam.
Rank and Answers1st is Caller 2. I would handle this call first because this patient needs to see an
emergency doctor right away due to the throat swelling.
2nd is Caller 3. The physician wants to talk about a patient and it could be an
important. If the physician were unavailable, I would ask if I could take a message.
3rd is Caller 4. The patient is always a priority. I would ask if I could put the caller on
hold for a few minutes, and then set up an appointment for him or her.
4th is Caller 1. I would ask for the patients name and number for the Dr. to call her
back. If I had other calls ahead that were more important, I would put her on hold.
