Amber Sankey spent eight weeks student teaching in one of two second grade classrooms
at West Fork Elementary School in Rockwell, IA. The school is located in a small, rural
community with a majority of the students coming from lower-middle to middle class
families. Miss Sankey worked with twenty-five second graders that ranged in abilities
from two Talented and Gifted students, seven students with an IEP, and five students in
the Title One reading program. She was responsible for teaching all of the curricular
areas. Her extra duties included supervising three recesses per week.
During Miss Sankey’s experience she was in charge of teaching several different leveled
reading groups during the Daily 5 Literacy block, Miss Sankey also created a science
unit on the human body. Her month long unit included creating a final assessment as
well as planning interactive activities that met the districts standards. She was
successful in monitoring and adjusting to various schedule changes in order to complete
the unit during her time of teaching
Miss Sankey regularly checked students understanding and modified her lessons to fit
their needs. A majority of the lessons were developed by her, and they met the lowa
Common Core Standards. These lessons showed her awareness of the different learning
styles. She enriched student learning with the use of hands-on manipulatives, iPads,
educational videos and games, and various projects. She was a hard worker and her
lessons were well thought out.
Miss Sankey created a welcoming environment for the students. She worked continually
on building a good rapport with all of the children. In the classroom she used a variety of
different management techniques, both whole group and individual, to keep the class
motivated and engaged in her lessons.
Amber possesses a positive and enthusiastic personality and that showed in how she
presented herself to the class. She was very professional with the students, staff,
parents, and administration. She attended after school staff meetings and professional
development meetings where she was an active participant in the discussions. Miss
Sankey showed a great deal of confidence in her abilities, but was also not afraid to ask
for help or advice. Amber was always willing to try something new. She even volunteered
to be a part of one of the skits in the West Fork Community Variety Show.
feel that because of Miss Sankey’s dedication, professionalism, and hard work, she
would make a successful teacher. She has exhibited a great deal of concern for her
students’ learning success. She has shown maturity in dealing with new and changing
situations. Amber Sankey would be a great addition to any school system.
