Ferrari discusses 10 habits that teachers can gain

to promote and become and well-rounded and
capable professional. These will help you become
that not just a great classroom practitioner.
One of the main ideas that stood out was Never
stop thinking of ways to be better teachers.
This is so teachers need to be flexible and open to
new ideas. Even reinvent the old activities, so that
they are relevant and practical. Ask for feedback
from students to see if they gain anything out of
these.
Another point was expectations. Set expectations
high for both behaviour and learning This takes
account for your actions as well as students actions.
Behaviour needs to be monitored and set
accordingly. Continue through these consequences
as just giving warning will help set the boundaries.
Make learning memorable - change the way a
lesson is instructed, this will break the mould and
allow students to learn in different ways but also it
allows them to remember it more and retain the
information given.
Empathise, but remain professional Students

These 10 habits are a great read and I can

relate to all of them. I do believe in the first
one, as educators we need to be on top of
things and always thinking of way to make
things better in the classroom. This is where
reflections come in, it will help to know where
things went right or wrong, etc. Having high
expectations is one of my main things i like to
have in my classroom. This has helped me to
have a great behaviour management and also
allows students to know where my expectations
are at. There is no confusion about where or
what the students are expected of them. I
believe that allowing students to know a little
about your life outside of school is important.
This helps to connect with students more,
however, I keep it professional and only tell a
little as there needs to be a clear drawn line to
where and what is said in the classroom.

dont need to know your whole life story, however, if

you have a story that can relate to help a student
out, keep it short and sweet and to the point. Dont
allow for personal judgement to creep in or allow for
too much personal information. Keep it at a level
that is not too much detail for students.

Stewart states that there is 3 tips to create and

introduce a growth mind-set within the class and to
ensure your students use this within their lives
inside and outside of the school
Tip1 explains about introducing growth mind-set and
how this can physically change your brain.
Tip2 introduces the language that is needed to help
develop and change their inner dialogue, self-talk
and how they talk with their peers.
Tip3 how to keep this up in the classroom and how
to use it effectively. Setting and creating goals
helps students to build awareness of their growth
and helps to celebrate their new learning.
Bray states there are five levels of a continuum of
choice for students.
Participant: This allows for students to show their
learning through a variety of different medias.
Co-Designer: Teacher provides little scaffolding and
then gets out of the way for learners to go on their
own way.
Designer: The learner chooses topics and they

This reading is a great back up in what I have

already learnt about growth mind-set. I use
Class Dojos to help this as they have focused
their videos on this topic. Students love to
watch this and then later on during the day. I
can hear the conversations they are having
with their friends - the dialogue and language
is what I am hearing coming through. I use
role plays during class, so student have a clear
understanding of when they can change their
mind-set. It is great to know that this is
having an effect on the students and they are
slowly changing how they think. If one student
has a deficient thinking, I can hear their peer
state thats not how you should think, you need
to change how you think about that, like this
Brays ideas to use the continuum would be
fantastic to use for the students that are
highly engaged in their learning and need more
of a challenge in their learning. This would
provide great leadership and ownership in their
own work. At this stage in my class, I do not
think that my students would be able to
maintain a high standard of work that is

design a plan using five points

Empathize, Define, Ideas, Prototype and Test.
Advocate: The learner chooses a challenge or
problem they are passionate about.
Entrepreneur: Learner self regulates, adjusts and
determines learning based on what they what to do
with their lives.
Sheningers opinion is that engagement is the
impetus for learning. Sheninger is afraid that
although there is technology in the classroom is
learning been integrated through this, and how is
this assessed, measured and managed. He states
that is should be engaging ad provide deeper leaving
opportunities where technology provides students
the means to think critically and to solve problems.
Digital learning should not be used to quiet
students; it should be used to engage learners and
to be active participators in class.

needed to for the success of this continuum.

However, I think that there are two students
in my class that will gain from this. I was going
to set up a similar thing to this.

Digital learning in class is a fantastic way to

keep student occupied in the class, but to
manage the engagement is another idea totally
separate. At the moment digital learning is
not high in my class as students struggle to
read whats on the page to find the page they
need. There needs to be activities that need
to keep the engagement. I believe with
Sheninger when he says it needs to be
measured and assessed.
