Linking Fine Art to Story Elements Activities

Thank you to the National Gallery of Art for some of these ideas.
1. Using one poster in a group activity have the children identify the setting,
characters, a potential conflict.
2. Set up posters around the room. Let children go to the poster that they
think is the beginning of the story. Have each group explain the characters
and setting of the story they think is happening. What do they think will
happen next? What makes them say that?
Then ask them to find the poster that is the end of the story. Why do they
think it is the resolution? What has happened?
Are there any posters that are problem/conflict or climax? Why would they
say that?
3. Using posters around the room, assign kids to groups. Have them come up
with a story that uses 4-5 of the posters.
4. Have a conversation between characters in two paintings.
