INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the How to Build Playful Pet Dog Instruction Set! This
instruction set will help you build an interactive dog (or cat if you prefer) for
children. There are two sets of instructions that you will have to follow. The first
set is building a circuit using littleBits. The second set is using different materials
to build the dog. These materials are not included with the littleBits pieces and
require a separate purchase. LittleBits are a cool new invention that allow anyone
of any age to create a working circuit. These circuits allow people to image the
unimaginable. The possibilities are limitless when it comes to littleBits.
Many children often beg their parents or guardians for a pet, usually a dog or
a cat. This project is perfect for those parents and guardians who want to give their
children all the fun of a pet without the mess. The project provides the perfect
alternative. This project is very kid friendly and requires adult supervision in a few
areas. These areas are bolded in red as a form of caution. Both you and the child
will have an easier time connecting the circuit because these little circuits have
magnetic connections that will not connect unless the magnets are lined up
correctly. Remember, when building your playful pet be sure to have fun and be
safe! For more project ideas visit www.littlebits.cc/. If any of the items included in
the littleBits box do not function properly, visit www.littlebits.cc/ for instructions
on getting a part replaced.

Tip: while assembling the pet, follow the image below as a reference
Step 1: Find a decent sized box to be the pets body. Cut a piece of cardboard to serve as
the head of the dog.
Step 2: Hot glue the bottom of the cups to the bottom of the box. Make sure the flaps of
the box are parallel to the ceiling and the floor so the top of the box can still be opened
Step 3: Place the battery and power switch inside the box. Cut a hole at the end opposite
of the head and let the servo sit in the hole to become the tail. Cut a hole on top of the
box for the pressure sensor and a separate hole for easy access to the power switch.
Step 4: Poke holes in the head of the dog for the eyes and tongue. The long LEDs go into
the eye holes and the vibration motor goes into the hole for the tongue. Tape the rest of
the circuit to the back of the head as shown in Figure 1 below.

Step 5: Draw ears, nose, nail, and spots on construction paper. Cut out the shapes and
tape onto the dogs body
Step 6: Add the foam balls to the LED lights for the eyes and place the tongue cutout on
the vibration motor
Step 7: Place string around the dogs neck and add a bell
Step 8: Make sure to place the tail on the servo and a spot over the pressure sensor
Step 9: Flip the switch into the on position and watch the dog come to life!
