Performance Assessment:

Again, I am doing Social Studies with a 6th grade Ancient Cultures class. The
unit topic is the fall of the Roman Empire. I decided to have students create a
Newspaper. This would be used as the Performance Assessment. Students
will work in small groups to create their own newspaper. Items included in
the paper are based off of Marylands Standards for Social Studies. Students
must create headings that match the articles, as well as appropriate
graphics. Items that I want include in the newspaper are as follows:

Major achievements of the Roman Era

Social structure, significance of citizenship and the development of
political institutions
Transition from Roman Republic to the Roman Empire
Factors that lead to the decline of the Roman Empire

The newspaper itself will be a great way to assess the knowledge gained
during the unit.
