Personalized Learning Prospective Student Information Form
ASPIRE Academy is a school within East Ridge Middle School. The students
and teachers at ASPIRE will be 100% focused on personalized learning. The
ASPIRE Academy students will benefit from flexible scheduling, cross
curricular lessons and project based learning. They will be encouraged to
take ownership in their own learning and teachers will become co-learners
with their students, guiding them on the path to educational success.
The students at ASPIRE Academy will have flexibility in how, what, when, and
where they learn. This will be achieved through the following avenues:
flexible learning environments, hands on learning, real world application,
student centered project concentrations, and student voice and choice on
how they want to demonstrate learning and mastery of standards.
In 1915, famed educator John Dewey wrote a book entitled Schools of
Tomorrow in which he complained that the conventional public school is
arranged to make things easy for the teacher who wishes quick and tangible
results. In criticizing the academies of his day, Dewey made the case that
education needed to adopt new instructional approaches based on future
societal needs. He claimed that 20th century schools should reorganize their
curricula, emphasize freedom and individuality and respond to changing
employment requirements. Failure to do so would be detrimental to young
people. In one of his most widely-quoted commentaries, Dewey predicted
that if we teach todays students as we taught yesterdays, we rob them of
