A Thought Leadership Study
2010Foreword
March 2010
‘To Our Cents and Friends inthe Communications, Technology and Health Care Industries:
‘Welcome to CSMG's milealth: Taking the Pulse, an overview ofthe opportunitics and challenges in the
mobile health revolution,
The US health care industry faces numerous challenges with rising costs, evolving reimbursoment and
insurance models and an aging, and generally less healthy population. In simple terms, the curent
structure doesnot allow for effiient raonaliation of consume, corporate, and government health eare
dollars. Our study does not attempt to address these numerous problems andthe myriad of solutions that
have been proposed for the industry. Our focus is on the role of technology, specifically mobile
technologies, in this transformation, Mobile solutions offer unique characterises that ean reduce health
fare costs and improve patent and practioner satsfution. By extending monitoring. for both
preventative and post-reatment care, ineteasing acess to under-served segments, and facilitating remote
testing and diggnores, mobile solutions are important components of a new health eare paradigm.
However, just because the technology may be ready doesnot mean the market i ready. As we found out
trough our study, there are significant challenges that must til be addressed before wide-scale adoption,
including uncertain fong-erm payerreimbursement models, legal and regulatory sues, concems over
‘quality, health eae provider aezetanee of new technologies, and of eouse, gaps in EMR that serves as a
{oundation of many mobile health solutions. In spite ofthese challenges, we are cautiously optimistic
lout the opportunities over the long-term. Moreover, the continved evolution of our connected world
‘ill demand that health cave accelerate these developments.
We vould like to thank all the participants in our study who provided valuable insights on the eurent
state of mobile health, Our interviews included a wide range of industry representatives from wireless
service providers, health cate software and hardware specialists, insurance providers, hospital systems
and physician practices, The insights from hese varied and diverse conversations were invaluable and
highly complementary to our interna research and analysis
