Inquiry Project Outline
1. Questions

What is reading and writing, and what do they mean to the instructor and ESOL students?
Can writing be taught?
How basic is basic when it comes to writing, and what role does it haveis it for survival
purposes, to write a letter, or to learn how to be a critical thinker?
What are we trying to accomplish, and what is the purpose?
How can basic reading and writing be incorporated in a class setting for non-English
speaking students?
Is an audience important, and is there a particular audience the writer is trying to reach?
How do you use reading in order to become a better writer as a teacher, and how is
reading used for students to become better writers themselves?
Is the use of models necessary?

2. Primary Sources

Interviews with teachers to get their perspectives about writing,


Interview Drs. Hartman, Land, Duffus?
Observe a couple of class settings: poetry class, college reading and writing class
Ask students how they feel about writing.
ESL/Basic Writing Syllabi for research

3. Secondary Sources

Look for articles or books on Donald Murray, Cynthia Urbanski, Peter Elbow
Possible chapters from previous class and A Guide to Composition Pedagogies
